Turning 21 in the MMP

Lady SCAdian pointed out that today is our younger daughter’s 23d birthday. The time, it flieth!

And why has petrol gone up 10-15 cents a gallon everywhere – even at the Exchange – in the last two days?

Howdy Y’all! Tummy is full of beef-veggie soup and cornbread. Nummy and comfortin’ on a cold and rainy afternoon/evenin’. All is well. Netflix has a show about the history of profanity. Doubt it can teach me anything I don’t already know, but it promises to be entertainin’, so there’s that. MOOOOOOM mentioned it on the Book of Faces. I can’t imagine her watchin’ such a thing however as we all know she is so delicate and sensitive!

The pearls are out and being polished as we speak…

Looks like there are quite a few of us history teachers (present or former) here. MetalMouse, you’re right, as you always are (and I bet you were a crackerjack and beloved teacher), but one of the things I tried to get through to my students was historian Barbara Tuchman’s dictum: no flash-forwards. Nobody knew what was going to happen next on December 7, 1941. I have no doubt we’ll get through these unprecedented crises, but what they portend, how they’ll change the country, what the “new New Normal” will look like, whether and how democracy will hold, is anybody’s guess, and I can’t flash-forward. I do tell myself to just focus on my little world today.

Nobody ever told me once you get into teaching, you never really get out, even with retirement. It’s a great blessing, isn’t it? I’m so grateful that so many former students keep in touch, not only to ask questions but to bring me their personal problems and share their good fortunes. The best job in the world!

On a more prosaic level, it’s Wash the Bed Linens Day. I’m not fond of the process, but I love the results. How often do you wash your sheets? I do it every two weeks. I figure I’m clean when I go to bed, so I don’t need to do it weekly.

I also got a call from Old Flame. In the course of the conversation, he recommended some Netflix series. Have any of you watched Still Game from the BBC? He said it was side-splittingly funny.

swampy, I wish I knew your menus for the week. I always crave whatever you’ve had for dinner, but I seldom have the ingredients. Right now I’m craving cornbread and homemade vegetable soup.

This reminds me of demands for details on Miss Owl’s and shoe’s escapades. Soft porn…food porn…there’s a common denominator in there somewhere.

Craving shared experiences…relishing connection…strengthening tribal ties…ensuring collective survival in trying times.

(I was a history major before being seduced into sociology and cultural anthropology)

We change the sheets every Sunday. Sunflower does not let me do laundry. My sorting and water temp selection skills are not up to her standard.

swampy, don’t forget, Mooooooom was in the navy. I’m sure she has a working knowledge of profanity. :stuck_out_tongue:

nellie, I wash the sheets every two weeks unless I’m having an overnight guest.

Relaxed in the studio this afternoon. I’m working up scraps from the goody bags that I posted for next year’s holiday cards (I know, I know, it’s January). The scraps are enough to make three cards from each sheet used for a bag. Once that’s done, I’ll go to town on Easter / Spring cards (Valentine’s are already finished). I actually sell quite a few valentines and a fair amount of Easter / Spring cards, so I have to get a head start on them. One of the brick and mortar stores that I sell through was inquiring about gift tags, so I’ll sketch some up and go through the scrap bin for small bits.

I have definitely heard my share of naughty language, and I’ve said a few less-than-dainty expletives, especially with regard to the grand high Cheeto, but I mostly try to curb my use of profanity. With few exceptions, I agree with whoever said that profanity is the crutch of the uneducated (or something like that.) I remember being in line at the chow hall in my early Navy days, and these two young Marines were behind me dropping the F-bomb every other syllable. I wasn’t offended, especially because it quickly became a nonsense word because of overuse. So if I let loose with a cuss or two, it’s deliberate.

FCD has arrived - it took less than 13 hours, which is good. I told him he needs to get home before Tues because long-range forecast is for snow/sleet/rain/nasty that day. Of course, it’s so far out there, who knows what will happen?

You won’t get any vicarious thrills from my supper - it was some steamed shrimp, a piece of cinnamon toast, and some peach frozen yogurt. Now I’m drinking water. I foresee an early bedtime since I only got about 4 hours of sleep last night. I’s tahred…

Well, I had dinner last night with Gentleman Caller. I suggested a chain place in his area but he said that place was noisy and suggested a small local restaurant that I’d never heard of and which was just a few blocks from his apartment. We had a very nice dinner, then he asked if I wanted to go to his place and meet his dog (and no, that is not a euphemism for anything!). I got the grand tour, met his dog (again, it was a genuine canine!) and we sat and talked about various things. Then I went home.

Sorry it wasn’t very exciting – I’ll try harder next time.

Evening all. When making my shopping list I forgot the butter (or in my case, the I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter butter) so when I went to fix grilled cheese sammiches tonight they ended up toasted cheese sammiches (with tomato and pickle). Belly is full and with the rain coming down pretty steady no reason to go outside.

nellie, I like kids and I like history, but I was not a good teacher; never could relate to teens and never really learned how to teach despite what college was supposed to do. Maybe if I had gone into elementary education…but what is done is done and I ended up in a great job that let me get to places I’d only dreamed of, so I’m not complaining. Teaching bug these days is coaching youth soccer.

FCM, glad FCD made it safely. And I have been known to say a few bad words at times, but since most of the time that I’m around people it’s while I’m coaching their kids, so inappropriate language would be…inappropriate.

Herald, I really thing the oil/gas companies use a Ouija board to determine what the gas price is…and happy B-day to daughter-unit.

Ok, off to internettin’ and readin’ for the evening. All y’all take care.

Why, you say this as if you expect us to make naughty double-entendres! While he’s not exactly forward, at leash you got to know his doggie, style of living, etc.

I admit I had an advantage. Through some fluke, I got hired as adjunct college faculty without having either a graduate degree or a single education course. I did well enough that they kept me on for 5 years, during which time I took education courses and got certified to teach grades 7-12. I have to say, the ed classes were a waste of time, and I was no better off for having taken them. However, having supervised student teachers, I can say education classes have improved lightyears since then. I’d bet money you weren’t given the preparation you needed, and someone should surely have steered you toward elementary ed.

About inappropriate words: for years, I wouldn’t let myself swear because I was afraid a swear word would slip out while I was teaching.(Note: most of those kids already swore like truckers.) As a result, I sounded like Yosemite Sam. “That frackin’, smackin’, goldurned copier!”

I should start thinking about dinner. I’m not hungry, though.

TVCTPMO just ate a rather long post. (grump)

Dinner tonight: tater tot casserole. Bit of a nutritional nightmare, but comfort food seems needed. I’m quite worried, around such things as the local crime rate and everyone’s apparent loss of social skills, that 2021 may be shaping up to become 2020 Part 2.

Hades Annex is so infuriating lately that part of my weekend may involve a few rounds of Plague Inc. I’m feeling quite misanthropic lately.

Goldbrickers are still at it, and I cannot figure out a legitimate explanation for why manglement is failing to notice this. Seriously considering trying to organize some of the other really busy call-takers for a protest such as a bunch not showing up on the same day.

A coworker got her lunch stolen out of the breakroom fridge today. Security footage is being reviewed to identify the target of disciplinary action that could (and IMO SHOULD) include termination. Sups did combine to make sure the victim got a lunch to eat.

I’m really wondering how deliberate this wording was.

According to another one of my mom’s friends, my mom and dad aren’t getting treated very well by the hospital. This is based upon the fact that they keep forgetting to give him oxygen or find a CPAP for him so that he sleeps well and that the doctor said he could have food, but they were still feeding him only clear liquids.

So his discharge is now looking like Saturday. That will be just a day short of 3 weeks in the hospital.

Had a strange dream where I traveled through time and met up with my history teacher from high school. Would be interesting to know what he thinks of all this. However, I graduated 30 years ago, so there’s a good chance he’s not alive to see this.

So glad it’s Friday. We got another bit o’ snow last night, which probably doesn’t hurt the snow pack higher up, but does make walking a bit more difficult. Today I need to go grocery shopping, which is another reason to wait a bit. The rolly cart I use tries to act as a snow plow if the snow’s too deep, so I’d rather wait until some of it melts and/or gets compacted.

Time to go to work.

Happy Friday!

Busted. I couldn’t resist.

So glad your dad is getting out of the hospital, though I wish it were purely because he’s doing so well. Does the hospital have lots of COVID patients, or is it understaffed, or just not a very good hospital? So glad he gets to graduate to real food!

Hey, you have a rolly cart, too? Yay! I’m the only person I ever see with one here. Now I feel like a cool kid. :sunglasses:

Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to sort. When I left the hub yesterday, there was a FedEx truck pulling up to the gate. Apparently we accept defectors.
: puts out NO SNOW signs :

That does make it more enjoyable.
[Monty Python]: nudge, nudge. Wink, wink : [/Monty Python]

Glad Dad might be getting out, Dicey.

Happy belated Birthday GrandFCM! And glad FCD made it down there safe.

nettie - let me get this straight - stealing a lunch merits an investigation, but not stealing a paycheck by goofing off all day? Interesting…

FCD is on The List. Since he lives here, he knows I go to bed early. But he decided to text me after 9:30 last night to tell me to sing to Higgs. I’d had just enough sleep to take the edge off, and it took another couple of hours to fall back to sleep. I don’t want to leave my phone in another room, just in case someone legitimately needs to reach me at night. But I wasn’t happy, and less so when I woke at 3:30 and couldn’t fall back to sleep at all.

So I’m up, showered, dressed, and fed. Critters have been tended to. I’m planning a productive day - we’ll see how that goes. After thorough caffeination, of course.

Happy Firday!

Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 46 Amurrkin out and cloudy with a predicted high of 51 and cloudy. So it’ll feel pretty much like the same temp all day. No big items on today’s agenda. We shall go to the hog trough Golden Corral today for N.O.L. due to the fact that OYKW has a desire to do so. Of course this means I will have to don appropriate bein’ about the public attire for the sixth day in a row! Horrors!

Miss_Owl GC wanted you to meet his dawg, aka his child. My, my! That sounds like a serious step.

Dicey hope your dad does get sprung tomorrow.

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the day! Rah,

Happy Firday Y’all!

All I’ve got today is completely and absolutely mundane, and that’s how I like it! I finally managed to get myself to bed last night at a reasonable hour, which made getting up so early way easier and less miserable. Who knew? Also, the yoga combined with some walking really, really, really helped, so now the only pain I’m experiencing is from terrible posture.

On another note, I needed a lamp on my desk, a nice bright one, so I stole one from downstairs. I’m now completely, unreasonably happy because of it. I’ve got my two gigantic monitors, my laptop and my non-work laptop and and my pencil sharpener. I might never leave this table.

Morning all. Have a short list of things I forgot at the Grocery store yesterday (milk, butter), so I will sojourn outwards later. 35F and gloomy outside so in no rush to leave the confines.

FCM, do you often sing to Higgs? Or is that chore normally left to FCD?

talky, when I redid my house last year, I bought a big desk from Staples and it’s hard sometimes to get me out of it (I’m typing this at said desk). So I know how you feel.

Dicey, sounds like your dad may do better at home than at the hospital in terms of recovery, long as he takes care.

Nettie, a ‘work action’ day sounds like an interesting idea. And stealing someone’s lunch is nearly a capital crime in most workplaces I’ve known.

OK, need to check a few things and head off to the store. All y’all take care.

One of the salesmen where I worked apparently had a problem with lunch thieves – he started writing “DO NOT STEAL!” on the bag along with his name. Every time I saw this I had to resist the temptation to take his lunch and leave a five-dollar bill in the bag…

Breakfasted and caffeinating. Decent weather predicted for the next week – highs in the upper 30s and mostly NOS, with lows in the mid 20s. Really do need to resume getting dressed and going for walks instead of just sitting around in my bathrobe all day…
