Tuscaloosa- what it be like?

I am leaving my current position (at Georgia College & State University, Milledgeville GA- in some ways I will really miss it and in others I can’t wait to leave) for a position at the Univ. of Alabama (Tuscaloosa, AL). I start the new job in January.

I spent a year in Tuscaloosa when I was a grad student so I know the basic layout of the town, but I had very little chance to enjoy the city since I was always either nipple deep in homework and projects and on weekends I was always on the road to Montgomery 100 miles away (my mother lives there and had major health problems at the time).

If any Dopers live in or near there or have lived in or near there, I’d love to have suggestions on places to go, good restaurants, where to live/not to live (I haven’t chosen an apartment yet), cool shops, ways to meet cool (i.e. open minded and fun and preferably 30-something) people, dos and don’ts, etc… (I love watching and performing in theater, so any word on the theater scene in T’loosa or B’ham would be really great).

All info is appreciated and no piece is too minor to share.

Shakespeare festival in Montgomery is excellent! The Broadway Theater League has a season in B’ham as well, IIRC, among other touring and local bric-a-brac. Lots of good stuff awaits ye mate. Dreamland BBQ! And, of course, there is some football there I hear.

BA

Yeah, but it’s college football, so I can’t imagine anybody really much caring about it. ;j

Yeah.

BA

Moved to IMHO.

I live in Tuscaloosa and have for quite a long time. Unfortunately, I am a poor married professional with kids and a mortgage. I am either at home or at work (the university). I hope that someone else can help. If not, I will struggle, but for the scene, your year here probably tells you more than I can.
