TV Guide's 50 Greatest Cartoon Characters

The greatest travesty of this list is easily SpongebobSquarePants. WTF?? How does that Johnny-Come-Lately-and-Pathetically make the top 10?? Ugly diner waitresses should be using that sponge-freak to wipe up the vomit from the after bar drunks that stumble in.

Second greatest travesty is Angelica from Rugrats. Absolutely ridiculous. Perhaps if they’d simply barred any and all Nicktoons from competition, the list would have turned out better.

No Disney character should even make the list, nor any of the original WarnerBrothers characters. An above poster was right in noting that these characters were created for theatrical shorts.

I would have gone with Homer, Fred Flinstone, and Rocky&Bullwinkle, in that order.

Rugrats isn’t a bad cartoon for parents to watch with there kids. At least that’s what I think. I know there are people who agree.

If we’re just going to give OUR personal favorates like Rex did, with no consideration for the whole picture… Fred Flinstone SUCKED! And what’s with the laugh track!? That cartoon was NOT funny.

were these supposed to be TV cartoon characters, or all cartoon characters, just in a TV magazine?

I think the TV Guide list reflects cartoon characters that have been featured in a TV show. So, a character like Dumbo wouldn’t be considered, even though the movie may have been shown on TV. A character like Bugs Bunny was created for theatrical shorts, but those shorts were in turn shown regularly on TV.

Here’s another nominee: the first interactive character, Winky Dink!
