TV show DVD wish list

Project G.e.e.K.e.r.

Does anyone besides me remember this cartoon? It was about a bald cyborg mercenary named Lady MacBeth and her partner Noah, a super-intelligent talking Tyrannosaurus Rex. They steal a cannister from nefarious Moloch Industries, which turns out to contain the top-secret Project GKR (Geno-Kinetic Research), the perfect weapon. But since Project GKR didn’t have enough time to… cook, the result is GeeKer, a goofy shape-shifting synthetic being. Wacky adventures ensued.

If this was released on DVD, I’d snap it up in a heartbeat. G.e.e.K.e.R was a HUGE part of my childhood.

My favorite by far of the Spielberg/Looney Toons was (and I know I’m in the minority) Histeria. I would love to have it on DVD.

Several of the UK-produced shows mentioned are out in Region 2 DVD; The New Statesman, for instance, and almost all the Gerry Anderson Supermarionation shows (even, now, obscure early ones like Torchy the Battery Boy and Four Feather Falls … there’s one outstanding, The Secret Service, but I understand that’s to be released shortly.)

And two compilations of Goodies episodes have been released, with more promised to follow … check out DVD producers Network for these, and some of the Gerry Andersons (and much else; Network, and rivals DD Video, have been bringing out a lot of very watchable archive stuff … )

“The Carol Burnett Show” and “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson”. Season-by-season, not the specials that are already out.

A box set “Dr. Who” for each regeneration would be spectacular.

Sadly, The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson is a bit of an impossibility. NBC had the foresight  to erase a lot of the footage, before Carson was able to gain full control of the show (in the 1980s, IIRC), so we’re SOL on that, then there’s the matter of the rights for the performances of the musical guests, which if the trials of WKRP and Beavis and Butthead are any example, are a nightmare to secure.

Yes and yes! Police Squad! I’d buy without a second thought.

And I’d save the D&D cartoon for a rental first, but really would love to see a rental. I remember its being really cool, but I can’t deny that this was back when I also thought that “Masters of the Universe” and “Fangface” and the “Plastic-Man” cartoon were really cool.

Another vote for Animaniacs. And a second for A Bit of Fry and Laurie.

I’d love, love, love to see Fernwood 2Night/America 2Night on DVD. I’d buy it in a second, and I’m pretty selective (if eccentric) about what I’ll invest in (Green Acres made the cut, but SCTV hasn’t yet).

I’d be willing to settle for episodes without the musical guests performing.

Outstanding show!

The first season was half-way through when i left Australia to live in the US. I’d really love to see the whole thing.

My wife was, until recently, anxiously waiting for Newsradio to come out on DVD. Seasons 1 and 2 were released recently, and we’ve been going through them with Netflix. I don’t think we got the show in Australia, and this was the first time i had seen it. It was also my first experience of Phil Hartman outsisde of his Simpsons appearances as Troy McClure. He’s fantastic, and the show is very funny. I’m looking forward to the later seasons coming out also.

Finally, it may not be very quirky or offbeat, but i’m really bummed that NYPD Blue has not been released on DVD beyond Season 2. While i watched this show right through until the final season, i always thought that seasons 2-6 with Jimmy Smits were the best years, and i’d really love to have them on DVD. Apparently Seasons 1 and 2 didn’t sell well enough on DVD to justify further releases.

I didn’t think I’d ever see it again, but I happened to check the Australian Broadcasting Company site, and they had series 1 on a regionless DVD. (Series 2 is still only on tape, but if they did the first on disc I’m hoping the second will be along eventually.)

One thing worth mentioning; the disc is region 0 (will play anywhere), but you still need some type of PAL compatible equipment to view it. I have a DVD player that can convert to NTSC.

I hadn’t seen the first few episodes before, and watching them on disc I thought the show definitely picked up as the series went along.

Yeah, friends of mine recently bought a DVD player that will play PAL DVDs in the US, and it only cost about $60.

Or i could also play it on my computer, where it doesn’t matter what format the video is.

I’ve got them on faded VHS, and IMO they hold up very well over time. Despite the repetitive nature of the plots (DM tells kids of a possible way home, kids go on quest, kids foil plot to stop villians but screw up their escape), there was some very good writing and characterization in those stories, especially when the team was torn over a morality issue that wasn’t clear-cut.

And, of course, the girls were hot.

This is a zombie thread! But it does suit my purposes.

First, that hippy-dippy, pun-filled kids’ classic “Make a Wish” (with Tom Chapin) would be wonderful, though they’ve probably missed the timeframe for nostalgic parents.

Second, and this is my big wish: NFL Films should release seasonal collections of “This Week in the NFL/Pro Football” going back to the 60s. There are a lot of people out there who would gladly buy, say, “The 1972 NFL Season” if they could. Oh, sure, NFL Films does sell individual episodes on their website, but they’re individually hand-burned and a single week’s episode costs $50. I suspect they could make a lot of money selling whole seasons at around $59 a pop.
Also, the entire Mission Impossible series is now available.
