I’ve just decided to get my cable re-hooked up, after being without for about a year. So, I’ve been out of the TV loop for a while. Can anyone recommend some quality shows for me? I like shows like The Simpsons, Family Guy, The King of Queens, anything British (comedies and mysteries), Good Eats, Mythbusters, Corner Gas, Iron Chef, Seinfeld, The L Word, Kids in the Hall, Frasier …
The Cartoon Network is rerunning Futurama. I find this series even better the second and third time I watch it.
The 4400 on USA is good.
Over There on FX looks promising.
Alas, Joan of Arcadia is no more.
If you do not like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you don’t deserve to own a TV.
House, on Fox is very good. I’ve watched one episode of Wanted on TNT, and enjoyed it (but there’s only been one episode so far.)
Medium on NBC & Numbers on CBS are both good. I’m also a big Law & Order junkie, as well as a CSI fan.
Sorry I can’t tell you much about what sitcoms are out there…I like dramas better.
Oh really?
Guess I better call Goodwill. I’ve got a few sets for them to pick up.
I love Veronica Mars on (don’t laugh) UPN. Its first season was last year, and I’m counting down until the second season starts; they’re currently running reruns on Wednesday nights. Yes it’s a teen drama, but I’m not a teen by a long shot and I found it very entertaining, suspenseful, well-written and -acted.
There’s some great stuff on BBC America. For example, they broadcast the original version of The Office, and while the American version of Coupling was jaw-droppingly awful, the original British version was hilarious. And Father Ted is great too.
Comedies:
Arrested Development (Fox)
Scrubs (NBC)
The Office (NBC/BBC America; there are American and British versions and the British one came first)
Stella (Comedy Central)
Kitchen Confidential (premiering this fall on Fox)
Late Night With Conan O’Brien (NBC)
Dramas:
The Shield (FX)
24 (Fox)
Cartoons:
Family Guy (back on Fox)
Justice League Unlimited (Cartoon Network)
South Park (Comedy Central)
Myth Busters on Discovery, Wednesday at 9pm. Incredible show debunking Urban Legends and Stories.
Daily Show with Jon Stewart on Comedy Channel 11pm M-Th. and shown following day I think at 8pm & 11:30PM.
He is the funniest comedy on TV right now and might be the best source of news (eh, not really: Internet best for news, Daily Show best on TV)
Dirty Jobs also on Discovery is a decent show. As for some of the shows not mentioned so far on deep cable:
Sci-Fi
Battlestar Galactica
Firefly (cancelled but currently airing on Sci-Fi Channel)
Drama
The Wire
Deadwood
The Sopranos
Six Feet Under
Angel (syndicated and on TNT)
The best show on TV now is Battlestar Galactica, but I recommend trying to catch up on a lot of previous episodes first, since it is hard to follow.
In my opinion, the two best shows that have started in the last two years are Arrested Development and Veronica Mars.
I’ll second “House”.
Also, I love Strong Medicine on - er - Lifetime
“Rescue Me” on FX. Sort of how the old show “Emergency!” would be if Steven Bochco had created it.
