Are there any scripted TV shows whose regular cast (i.e., excluding recurring or guest stars) meets all of the following criteria, at least for one whole season?
The cast contains at least three adults.
The adults include both men and women.
The shortest woman is taller than the tallest man.
The only series I can think of that comes close is Get Smart, which had only three regular actors. The 5′ 8½" Barbara Feldon was noticeably taller than her 5′ 7¾″ co-star Don Adams, but she was barely beat out by her other co-star, the 5’ 9" Edward Platt.
I submit The West Wing. Allison Janney is the tallest member of the cast by listed height (6’0”). Janel Moloney is listed at only 5’9” - shorter than Richard Schiff (5’10”), Bradley Whitford (5’11”) and Rob Lowe (5’10”) - but in most candid shots I’ve seen, she appears taller than all of them. I wouldn’t list Stockard Channing as a regular cast member.
I’ve never seen the show, but I checked out the season 3 opening credits on YouTube: Stockard Channing gets second billing, which would be pretty strange if she wasn’t a regular cast member.
I’m thinking that the best way of finding an answer to this question is to look for shows that have a famously tall actress starring in a relatively small (in terms of number of actors) cast. For example, did Terry Farrell or Kristen Johnston (both about 6′ 0″) star in any sparsely populated shows? (3rd Rock from the Sun doesn’t work because, even though Johnston towers over French Stewart and Wayne Knight, she’s dwarfed by John Lithgow, and in any case the main cast also includes the diminutive Jane Curtin.)
Speaking of Allison Janney, what about “Mom”? Mostly female cast, but in early seasons there was a boy who played Anna Faris’ son, and later seasons had William Fitchner (in a wheelchair).
She was an irregular cast member, and only received billing for episodes she was in. Leaving out a credit in a billing would be pretty strange if she was a regular cast member.
This would probably win the thread if we admit the wheelchair. Fichtner, who doesn’t use one in real life, is 5′ 11½″ compared to Janney and Johnston’s 6′ 0″. But he’s definitely taller than the other actresses.
For the purposes of this thread, there’s no requirement that every female be paired with a male. A show whose entire cast consists of Lynch, Davis, Janney, and one male actor would be fine.
Yeah, I knew the wheelchair was cheating. Plus, Matt Jones (the guy who played Badger in Breaking Bad) was a semi-regular as Anna Faris’ ex and that guy’s pretty huge.
This isn’t related to the topic of the thread, but on West Wing the credits are in alphabetical order, Since her last name starts with C, she would be in the beginning. And I believe she was only in the credits if she was in the episode.
Correction: it was Rob Lowe first (until he left), Martin Sheen last (with the coveted “and” before his name) and the rest of the cast in alphabetical order.
I’m withdrawing West Wing from submission. My wife reminded me last night that while Janel Maloney looks taller than the males in candid shots (usually red carpet pics), she’s also likely wearing heels.
It doesn’t count, but I just saw an episode of MASH (“Margaret’s Wedding”) where one of the nurses was taller than every man in the cast except for Alda and Farrell. Her name is Mary Peters, IMDB shows her height as 5’10" and she has 14 credits as an actress and 55 as a stuntwoman.
Big Night (1996, U.S., dir. Stanley Tucci, Campbell Scott)
At one point in the film, there are three romantic couples. In each of the three couples, the woman is taller than the man. I haven’t seen the film since it came out in 1996. I don’t remember the plot very well. I remember thinking to myself and then telling someone else about how in each of the couples, the woman was taller than the man.
