The last few years we’ve tuned in that a similar program while opening christmas gifts. The first year we had a big screen TV, the wife took a picture of me and my sons pretending to warm our hands in front of it.
Still, it is not really a key part of anything other than a source of background christmas music for us. I guess I should point out that there are variants of this with the sound of the fire and with music.
Oh yeah! It was on either WOR or WPIX in NYC. We used to hang our stockings from the TV and open our gifts with the TV on Yule Log.
Didn’t they bring it back a few years ago?
We get Yule Log in HD all December-Woot! And no crappy carols -just sweet fire cracklin’ sounds. I taped last years’ log.
I remember the WPIX Yule Log from my youth (well, not all that young; we had to wait until we got cable in 1965). It was oddly fascinating. It was also nice to know it was there every year, so we always watched a bit of it (trying to time the loop, if nothing else.)
We’ve always had a real fireplace.
Anyone else make a drinking game out of it? Whenever the poker gets used, you all scream POKER! and drain your glasses. I think it runs on KOFY - channel 20 - around here.
I hate it with a severe hatred. I look at it for a few seconds, think of throwing Ryan Seacrest in it, then quickly turn the channel.
I’ve never seen it broadcast on TV, but my families never had the TV on during Christmas Day.
<writes on calendar for Dec. 25th> “look for yule log before going to work”
Might be nice while getting ready to go.
I’ve never heard of it, but it sounds wonderfully cheesy and I’m jealous of all those in NYC who get it.
It brings back such good memories of celebrating Christmas with my roommate when we were right out of college and living the fun party life in NYC. We had it on video so we could play it throughout the holiday season. Yes, watching for the poker was a big deal.
Comcast has this and some other ones on demand. I put the Yule Log on and was horribly bored, plus Christmas music annoys me anyway.

We watched it every year on WPIX in North Jersey when I was a kid ('70s.) I’ve been trying to find a screensaver version. It’s very relaxing.
I think it’s creepy, opening up presents, etc. without SOME ambient noise in the background. By Christmas Eve I am sick unto death of carols, and you don’t want to be distracted by, say, The View ladies shrieking, or God forbid CNN - so a nice crackling log is perfect.
They should have something like that for every holiday. And I wish they would put The Aquarium on an otherwise unused channel, just for stress relief.
Put it on every Christmas morning while the child opens presents. My wife thinks it’s retarded, but she tolerates it.
Straight from WPIX.
We had a lit fireplace in the living room, and the Yule Log on TV on WPIX (I think too) in what we called “the front room”.
I love the Yule Log!
My wife and I recorded it on Tivo two years ago. We loved it, and it’s become a holiday tradition. When the Tivo hard drive sadly went Kaput, and we realized that our satellite package no longer included the NYC local channels, we searched around and came up with several DVD alternatives which allowed us to change the type of fire/remove the music, etc.
So yes, we like this tradition.
