Hey, Blue State folks, kindly refrain from making things harder on those of us who are trying to house-train this state. It’s a big damn job–the DFW metroplex alone is bigger (or at least, more populous) than about half the countries in Europe, but we’re slowly starting to paint it blue, or at least purple. You presumably have the numbers to vote your lunatics down, so quit trying to dump them on us; it will only slow things down.

:stuck_out_tongue:

At least you have Austin. In Montana, once you get out of Missoula it’s coyotes and Red Staters, and the coyotes aren’t the ones listening to Rush Limbaugh.

That said, we did re-elect Tester. It was a close race, though.

I personally found the video response by TheAtheistTroll to be most entertaining!

Here’s a less simplistic map–it’s a Purple America! Most Texas cities preferred Obama; how can the far 'burbanites & country folk secede without us? And we’ve got some large spots of intense blue; unfortunately, those bits down along the Border are not heavily populated. Even California isn’t exactly pure blue…

Also, some of those wishing to leave their Obama-voting states seem to be looking for A Whiter America. Which is definitely not Texas…

Clicking on some of these YouTubes leads to the risk of clicking others, e.g. a spiteful clip about Michelle Obama from the Sean Hannity show (or rather a TYT review of the segment). The hate from the right-wing is so saddening. The primary charges against the First Lady (besides her skin color) seem to be her anti-obesity remarks and the fact she appeared with the vile misogynist David Letterman.

Her beef seems to be more with people who didn’t share her videos than with people who voted for Obama. Yes Shelly, you yourself could’ve save truth, justice, and the American way if only some of your friends would’ve shared your videos.

Hell, you went to all the trouble of actually buying a computer (you’re cutting edge, lady!) then spent a whole year learning to use it. The least they could’ve done was share you videos!

Um… is that Joan Cusack?

Thanks for reminding me that Tea Partiers aren’t the only ones who forward around stupid email. I’d told all my loony friends to stop forwarding me their garbage, so I had forgotten. Ugh.

I have the weirdest boner now.

Do you have any idea where that ancient piece of glurge originated? (You know it’s neither original nor new.) Do you have cites to back up the statistics?

Sorry–no Secession. Quite a few Americans died to settle that question back in the 19th century…

The email takes a narrow view of red states (Texas, Oklahoma and former slave states - I don’t know whether the author counted Missouri. I trust New York was not included). If you consider the red/blue divide from the 2000 election though, Paul Krugman gave a breakdown in a 2002 column about farm subsidies: I’ve done some statistical comparisons using one popular definition of the heartland: the “red states” that — in an election that pitted both coasts against the middle — voted for Mr. Bush. How do they compare with the “blue states” that voted for Al Gore?

Certainly the heartland has no claim to superiority when it comes to family values. If anything, the red states do a bit worse than the blue states when you look at indicators of individual responsibility and commitment to family. Children in red states are more likely to be born to teenagers or unmarried mothers — in 1999, 33.7 percent of babies in red states were born out of wedlock, versus 32.5 percent in blue states. National divorce statistics are spotty, but per capita there were 60 percent more divorces in Montana than in New Jersey.

And the red states have special trouble with the Sixth Commandment: the murder rate was 7.4 per 100,000 inhabitants in the red states, compared with 6.1 in the blue states, and 4.1 in New Jersey.

But what’s really outrageous is the claim that the heartland is self-reliant. That grotesque farm bill, by itself, should put an end to all such assertions; but it only adds to the immense subsidies the heartland already receives from the rest of the country. As a group, red states pay considerably less in taxes than the federal government spends within their borders; blue states pay considerably more. Over all, blue America subsidizes red America to the tune of $90 billion or so each year. The Unofficial Paul Krugman Web Page

It’s an oddity of American politics that the regions most firmly attached to the government’s teat are those who posture as self-reliant, anti-government, Ann Rand wannabees.

Just think of Victoria Jackson…

That’ll do it alright :frowning:

I think I’ll stick with Joan. Always liked that Irish salt to her.

Speaking on behalf of Norway, yes. Yes, we would.
