Twisty's Christmas Special

Ok, don’t kill me yet for starting a christmas thread before Thanksgiving! (have a good one, BTW)

As some of you know, I volunteer as a DJ on a hospital Radio station near where I live. Myself and one of the other DJ’s are planning to co-host a christmas show.
I need a few idea’s. We plan on doing a Christmas number one’s show, with a few of the worst Christmas songs ever released thrown in.

So here is where y’all come in.

Suggest a Christmas song, (and a little about the song if you are suggesting a really bad song), and if I can play it (its a 2 hour show, so I will probably fit it in), I’ll mail you a tape of the show as a thank you.

I also want to fit as many SDMB in-jokes into the show as possible. Seeing as noone really listens to the Hospitable radio anyway, I can probably get away with them.)

So, any suggestions?

Grandma got Ran Over by a Reindeer a Doctor Deminto release I believe. shiver

…or are you looking for songs that arn’t SUPPOSED to be bad? In that case… Jingle Bells… 'nuff said.

My sister had a New Kid’s On the Block Christmas CD…I suppose I could send that to you.

Fairytale of New York by The Pogues ought to cheer the sick bastards up

“Christmas at Ground Zero” or “The Night Santa Went Crazy,” both by Weird Al.

For good traditional ones…I always liked “I’ll be Home for Christmas” and “Blue Christmas.”

Mariah Carey does an “up-tempo” version of Silent Night on her Christmas album which is extremely difficult to listen to.

Falcon beat me to the Weird Al songs, dammit. Well, you could always try to get her to sing some pagan carols for you.

Seriously, the one piece of “Christmas music” that I really like is the Carol of the Bells. I don’t know that it fits your format, but it’s a beautiful piece.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I’m definitely going to use “The night Santa went Crazy” and “Grandma got run over by a Reindeer”

Carol of the Bells? cant say I know it, but if you can tell me where I can find a copy of it, I’ll see what I can do!

New Kids on the Block Christmas Album?? Perfect!!!

I’ll be playing the classics, such as Slade et. al, but one song I am definitely looking for is Bing Crosby and David Bowie singing Little Drummer Boy/ Peace on earth. Anyone know where you can get a copy of that?

Well, there’s a whole Vandals X-mas album, but I doubt anybody wants to listen to punk.

A couple good (Bad, depending how you look at it) ones from the cd: Grandpa’s Last Christmas, My First Christmas as a Woman, Punkified Dance of the Sugarplum Fairies…

Wait, does that mean I get a tape? WOOHOO!

 (And I now have “Christmas at Ground Zero” going through my head. Damn you all.)

Try These:

Big Valium Christmas Head The Goatmen (rather appropriate for the hospital, don’t you think?)

I Farted on Santa’s Lap (Now Christmas Stinks for Me) The Little Stinkers

Yah Das Ist Ein Christmas Tree Mel Blanc

Heat Meiser (my personal favorite) The Whatnots

Good luck wiht your show.

“oh holy night” by the oak ridge boys is rather scary.

“i’m getting nothing for christmas”, i think the chipmunks have that on their christmas album.

“the carol of the bells” is really a good pic. balance, one of my favs as well. try manahiem (sp)steamroller, or the mormon tabernacle choir for that carol.

my personal favourite is the “coventry carol.”

good luck with the show.

This seems rather tame in comparison to some of the greats already listed, but hey, I DEFINITELY want a tape!

Santa Baby, by Madonna*
All I Want for Christmas is My Two Front Teeth

And of course,Christmas in Hollis, by Run D.M.C.*

*From the first Very Special Christmas album. I’ve got it on vinyl.

Little Saint Nick As done by the Muppets in the Muppet Christmas with John Denver.

Percy the Puny Poinsetta by Elmo and Patsy; it’s on the same album as Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer.

As for good songs, my favorite traditional songs are O Holy Night and Gloria (I can’t think if that’s the actual title or not. In Excelsis Deo). If you can get a hold of it, Til Santa’s Gone (Milk and Cookies) is a fun song, as is Christmas Shopping.

*Jingle Bells,*the barking dogs version. I don’t know who does it, but if you want annoying Christmas music, you gotta have it.

My absolute favorite is the Ray Charles version of “Little Drummer Boy”–makes me teary just thinking about it. It is on one of the “Stars Come Out for Christmas” CDs.

So far as bad songs go, if you can find someone with the album Christmas with Shirley and Squirrely (and Melvin, too!)–you are all set. It’s got the classic favorite “Christmas Haunted House”!! Can’t beat it! (Oh, BTW, if you do find someone with it, tell them I will buy it from them!)

There’s also a song called “Shadrach, the Black Reindeer”. I cannot remember who sings it (for some reason my brain is saying Loretta Lynn but I could be wrong) but it is truly odd.

I don’t know if you’d be able to get your hands on a copy, but R.E.M. did a really funny song called “Christmas Griping” that was released only to fan club members.

How about Kevin-Bloody-Wilson?

Cant tell you what the song is, I had an MP3 (gosh!) somewhere, goes like this…

'Hey Santa Clause, you c@nt
wheres me f#cking bike,
wrote ya f#cking letter
and I came to see ya twice

Ive opened all this other junk
and theres f#ck all that I like
ya stupid geriatric fart
ya forgot me f#ckin bike’

Or something like that.

Might be easy to find if you have an australian connection.

WhooHooo! That was me!

And to mirror what others have said… yes “Carol of the Bells” is probably the most beautiful and haunting of the simi-modern carols.
