Two prisoners escape using tactis similar to Escape from Alcatraz. I predict a movie very soon.

This is the saddest thing I’ve read in this thread.

The most recent news reports I’ve seen haven’t mentioned power tools, but have said that Mitchell supplied them with the tools they used to escape. I’ve got to say, if these guys did all that cutting with “hacksaw blades, chisels, a punch and a screwdriver bit”, I am begrudgingly impressed.

The articles on the escape have shown photos of the hole they cut in the 24" pipe through which they escaped the prison. But one article said that they cut their way out of that pipe using a hacksaw blade. I’m skeptical. It’s hard enough to imagine someone of their size being able to move in a 24" pipe, but to cut a hole from the inside large enough to get out? And I’d think this hole would have to be the last thing they did so that would have to be done the night of their escape.

How much of the cutting was done in advance and how much did they do the night of the escape?

Distracting the police on one side of town and then committing a major robbery elsewhere is an old criminal ploy.

I want these guys caught too. 800 cops seems like a huge, almost unfathomable number too me. I live in a rural state. Many of our towns don’t have 800 people in them. But if they have that much available manpower to search for two escapees then by all means use it.

An explanation about the power tools. I knew all that work wasn’t done entirely with hand saw blades.

If I were on the run, I’d run at night, through rural areas, woodlands…etc. Basically stick to the wilderness and survive like such. Some people can hermit up in the mountains and woods for years without discovery if they don’t want to be discovered. I’d make my way into Canada, plenty of land to hide in but you’d have to dedicate yourself to living off the land for the rest of your life.

Very few folks could ever do that, maybe 1% of the population could survive in the woods for a extended length of time. Michigan has a similar climate, and I seldom wear short sleeves just working out in the yard. The bugs down in the woods will just about carry you away, a little piece at a time. And you need water, sometimes pond or stream water has parasites in it. Food isn’t easy, especially if you don’t want a fire. The only thing worse than roasted squirrel is raw squirrel.

And from my travels into Canada, the locals up there are not going to waste any time sending a couple of murderer’s back home.

They are highly motivated.
If they had airline tickets to Mexico, and left clues to make the authorities believe they were still in New York, they would have a hell of a head start.

There are multiple law enforcement agencies involved–and naturally each one’s top priority is to ensure that they are the ones to get the glory. So they are not cooperating–particularly the State Police which is the lead agency:

Buffalo Bill, dude!

I vote somebody with access to the prison schematics (infrastructure diagrams) found a possible route and started from the outside, leaving only the initial cut for the inside job.

The fact that they have not been captured suggests outside help was standing by.

If the accused employee was in on it, she should have had an accident the first time she got into her car after parting company. Leaving a loose cannon behind was exceedingly sloppy.

It is the night, my body’s weak
I’m on the run, no time for sleep
I’ve got to ride, ride like the wind
To be free again

I was born the son of a lawless man
Always spoke my mind
With a gun in my hand
Lived nine lives, gunned down ten
Gonna ride like the wind.

Rough living like that is pretty far from easy and my guess is that the fugitives lack the necessary skills, anyway.
If they want to stay free, they need to have split up with neither knowing the other’s plans. They need to have not run straight back to their home areas, which how lots of jailbreakers get caught. They need to avoid crime as a way to sustain themseves right now, no matter how tempting knocking over that Piggly Wiggly might be. Blending into the local homeless/transient population for a while until they aren’t at the forefront of every agency’s attention would be a better bet than trying to hide in the woods. They are in NewYork state? PA and OH ard full of industrial towns gone to seed with cops already too busy to notice one more transient. That said, I hope these two pus-bags are captured or killed ASAP. They don’t seem the types to go straight if they evaded capture.

I think they’re on a Mexican beach somewhere in Zihautanejo, fixing up an old boat and waiting for Red.

I’m guessing they had an accomplice to pick them up in a car and take them to a safe house.

I have to agree Cuomo has been unusually high profile in this case. My state had numerous jail escapes and a couple prison escapes in the past twenty years. None of my state’s three governors (during that period) showed up at the scene for photos. They pretty much let the Dept of Corrections and the police handle it. Standard internal investigations looked into how the escapes happened and remediated any issues . We had a murderer walk off his assigned job just last year. He was a trustee with an exemplary prison record. Only three years from finishing his sentence. Quite foolish to escape when he had almost completed his time. He was arrested in Florida about ten days later. I suspect he won’t gain the prison’s trust again.

Cuomo announceda special investigation today.

I guess tensions between the various law enforcement agencies is high. Everyone’s tired and concerned what these escapees might do. Leaks to reporters is bound to happen.

Cuomo may just be a more hands guy then other governors. NY is not my state and I don’t know his style.

Yes, that’s how he is, his father Mario was the same way.

I also wonder if it has anything to do with his battling with De Blasio and De Blasio’s rough relationship with the NYPD. Maybe he’s trying to look very pro-law enforcement to show De Blasio up.
