I got some great advice on TES forums, in case anyone wants the info. I summoned a scamp to fight them for me. It was great!
Anyone using hand to hand as their primary attack?
I’m considering making a monk/mage character that does hand to hand and destruction. HANDS OF DOOM.
Anyone want to try out my quest?

It’s about 13 MB.
I need some external bug testing, since I’ve been staring at the thing for ages.
I’m doing that- it works pretty darned well. Bear in mind, though, that once you start fighting ghosts, you’ll need to zap 'em with magic… since your fists don’t count as magic weapons and there’s no way to make them so.
Personally, I went with Light Armor specialization, and I’m currently collecting the full set of Bound Items… but I’m not completely sure that’s the way to go. In Morrowind, the Bound set gave you other bonuses while you were wearing them- but now it just looks like they’re lightweight Heavy Armor. I’m not sure they’re really worth it now.
Maybe there’s a ring (silver?) that you can wear to fight undead? If not, make a mod!
Jumping in a bit late, just got Oblivion. Absolutely love it, although my Vid card is a bit weak. Hmm. Investment opportunity.
Anyway, I don’t know if anyone mentioned the easy way to get print screen to work…
I didn’t bother starting with a blank file, just copied and went straight to 5/6.
Changing the .ini file doesn’t always allow printscreen to work. It seems to require HDR to be turned on ingame. I gave up and run FRAPS instead.
I learned something the hard way this weekend. I used the console command Showracemenu to alter my character’s appearance. After playing another couple hours I realized that all my skills had been reset to much lower levels. So don’t do that. There is a workaround, in case anyone is interested: After Showracemenu, make your changes, but do not click the Done button. Just do a Save in a new slot and reload it to continue gameplay with the altered character. The skills should be unaltered.
I’m a little too late to be of help - but I had a lot of trouble with those zombies as well. The first one I killed I ended up using three potions, so I decided that it must be possible to kill one without using all my potions…
…five reloads later, I realized my lesser power of Blessed Word (turn undead) could be useful.
I would Turn Undead, fire off 2 or 3 Weak Fireballs, then wait. Just as the Turn Undead wore off, I would have regained enough Magicka for another turn undead, and so on. Each zombie took a couple minutes to kill, but if I could isolate them, I was never in any real danger with that strategy. Obviously of little or no use if you didn’t choose the sign of The Ritual…

I did that mission last night with a female Breton mage — lots of Magicka — and just cast Fire Bolt at them from a distance. It took two shots per zombie and they dropped. Of course, I’m only level 2 on that character, so… I dunno.
Hmmm…either someone’s been messing with my difficulty slider behind my back, or I’m going to have to admit to being entirely incompetent (or extremely inefficient) at this game…
Well the monsters get harder as you level unless you’re using a rebalance mod. I’m playing with oscuros overhaul mod myself because I didn’t like the idea of running into bandits with the best armor/weapons in the game and it seemed like he really thought about every change he made.
I have to say I love this game. I was unsure when I bought it because I was one of those freaks that never enjoyed Morrowind (I actually had someone on this board flat out tell me if I didn’t like Morrowind I didn’t like ANY open ended game). However my problem with that game was the main quest didn’t interest me and the directions for other quests were terrible (seriously go do something somewhere over there in a place you never heard of…when you get the chance.) Here they did go a little the opposite and give you a little too much info. I have run across a few quests that don’t flat out tell you exactly what to do but they’re pretty rare. I’m the head of two guilds (two more to go), champion at the arena, stolen 20,000 items (seriously your silverware is not safe around me), and I haven’t even started the main quest yet. I plan to do that soon then start all over again with a new character and turn the rebalance mod off to see how the game is ment to be played.
I’d also recommend the skeleton key quest and the quest that gives you a ring with a permanent 35% chameleon on it for ANY class really (they are shrine quests I’ll spoil them for you if anyone asks). Even though I’m pretty good at that lock pick mini game I certainly got tired of doing it over and over it’s so much better just to hit ‘auto’ a dozen times until it opens, and the ring means you can always get at least one sneak attack for the extra damage.
Or somebody’s been messing with mine. Like, uh, me.
I forgot that I had bumped it down a tad and hadn’t reset it when I got the game save organizer thingy.
You little klepto. When I break into a home, I’m on a strict price/weight ratio (with the exception of certain alchemical ingredients). Before my computer crashed, I was using one of the weight mods, but I might as well have given myself unlimited money.
In case anyone is curious, my Mercantile problem FINALLY resolved itself. After roughly 25 hours of gameplay, and probably 10 level-ups (both are guesses), my mercantile started to rise by itself. I have read that these attribute freezes (I think there is another similar problem that I read about on the TES forums) do that - you get the boost immediately, but then you have to earn the points equal to the boost before that attribute will start rising again. I don’t like that system, and I hope it is a bug.
I think I bump mine down a notch everytime I play - I’ll be on “super-easy” in no time.
Don’t everybody laugh, but when I first got the game I hadn’t read about the difficulty slider, and I thought “I’m a RPG pro, I’ll raise the difficulty”…and I did…up to about 80% of the max. This turned out to be a mistake. :smack:
Darkhold - I’m doing the opposite, I’m planning on playing the game on default settings at first, then playing again with some mods. I’ll be sure to check out that oscuros mod - thanks for the tips.

I liked to hit inns. Go pay for a room then go to the dinning room late night. Tons of silverware nobody around…
Strange thing is I’ve never stolen in my life but I can’t resist that little red hand. Same with pickpocketing someone passes by and I just have to see what they have on them. I have tons of house keys for houses I never intend to hit…and now that I’m forging my own spells at the Mage’s Guild I’ll be able to make stronger and stronger chameleon.
If anyone is curious this is the mods I’ve been running
All +5 attributes mod (means anytime you get a bonus to an attribute you get a +5 instead of whatever you should have had…too overpowering I had to turn it off)
Dej Harvest (I think it was mentioned upthread. Changes harvested plants so you can tell the difference between harvested or not)
Fathis Fix (fixed a bugged fence near the end of the thieves quests)
Full Oscuro’s Overhaul (read the readme to see all he did…but it boils down to some creatures are ‘capped’ so they can’t keep pace with you while others have a lower end cap so you can’t go to those areas too soon or they’re too dangerous. More like your typical RPG plus several dozen little additions)
KT Custom Race fix (fixes a bug that if you use a custom race the script that starts in the jail doesn’t work and the king never comes to open the passage)
No More Annoying Messages Lite (turns off that ‘loading area’ that doesn’t’ mean anything on PC’s)
Unlocker (unlocks all races/classes in the game allows you to use any combo of race/hair/eyes and allows you to ‘fast travel’ even from inside buildings…however I just wanted it so I could mix and match eyes and haircuts across races you can make some mean looking bastards)
I’m going to add ‘Improved Barter gold’ next time I play through. It adds 84 gp to all merchants in the game for every point you get in mercantile up to a max sounds like a good way to make that skill more useful
Isn’t most of that silverware worthless? Do you steal the food? My weak dark elf needs every ounce of carrying capacity. I’m often doing a worth/weight calculation to determine what to keep and what to ditch.
You can always spot the finance guys.
Depends on how you define worthless. The amusement value of literally stealing the silverware is hard for me to resist. I have all the fences unlocked so I usually have someone on hand to unload it all on.
for your price value breakdown
Fork/knife/spoon
Weight: .1
Price: 2
So 20 a lb
I have no idea when you decide something is valueable enough to steal. My warrior type used to just dump his armor off before a big heist and had enough carrying room for whatever I wanted…until I got the 50% weight reduction perk then I didn’t even have to do that. I can’t wait for the 100% reduction. Another thing is robbery in and of itself really isn’t a money maker anyway I’ve fenced something like 10,000 gold but that doesn’t even touch what I make questing a few dropped magic items sell for insane amounts of money.
As for food I brew it into potions as soon as I can that drops the total weight down. And the right potions can really be worth a goodly amount (though I haven’t really tracked it very close. Just throw a few things together and see what looks to be worth the most)
Guilty as charged!
