Why would we do that? It’s a well known fact, much like cheese doodles.
We have, in the original thread. It’s been roundly dismissed, and she’s been asked to provide cites. Should she return and continue to discuss the matter (as yet she hasn’t) no doubt we’ll have it out.
Her statement struck me as ignorant (albeit shockingly so) rather than malicious, so I didn’t feel the need to savage her personally for it.
Well pardon me, but I thought it went WAY beyond ignorant and into troll territory. Hell, I reported the damn post because I was so SURE that’s what it was. Huess we wait and see as always.
I’m sure Even Steven didn’t mean anything, LittleLamb. Can’t we all get along, and resolve to spell one another’s names correct from now on?
No! No! No! I refuse!
Now shut the fuck up, wally wanker.
You may be right. I’m not certain. Some people genuinely believe such nonsense.
What the fuck is it around here?
Tygerbite or whatever hell he is posts something that innocuous and he gets pitted for? Shit, I’m over 4,000 posts, lots of them with more snark than than SOB has shown, and nobody’s ever pitted me. Hell, I almost want to pit him for getting pitted.
Lucky bastard.
Well, I guess it had to happen sometime.
First point: I’m female; proudly so. And some of the people in this thread are clearly aware of it. I’ve never tried to hide my gender. I recently referred to myself (not for the first time) as grandmother of a teen in a different GQ thread. However, I recall that early in my membership here I thought QtM was female; he graciously ignored my goof. Gender mistakes get a pass from me; this is a mere clarification.
Second point: I called my links the result of a “quick and dirty” search. To “dis” my links was, I feel, a mistake, especially to slander me for a link I did not give (the Pakistani site). I didn’t claim that any of them were definitive, or even necessarily correct; merely that they were sites providing information on what suttee was/is. I did not represent any of the links to be scientific, except for the one pointing to the summary of some Johns Hopkins University professor, whose article is not accessible to me. Does the OP allege that one is not scientific? If so, I recommend that he take it up with JHU, which may take umbrage - or may ignore him. I requested a former co-worker who is presently on the faculty of JHU to get me a copy of another anthro article on that site last September. He said he would, but somehow it has never shown up, nor have I heard anything further, although I responded to that email, asking him how his summer visit back home (to another continent) was, and about his son. Unlike the writer of a famous Motown song of my generation, I am too proud to beg.
I did think that the one report - the story of a near relative of one of the last reported suttee choosers/victims - was also worthy of notice. I did not say I had no time to consider the sources even sven gave; I said rather that I’d given up on doing that kind of research. As an added point of fact, I am now disabled and without a vehicle. Getting to a library that would have the books (I suspect the nearest one is probably Tulane, more than a hundred miles away) is simply not within my power at this time. When I tried inter-library loan not long after moving here, the miserable local library couldn’t seem to be able to manage it - and the book requested was not an academic treatise. I am thus entirely reliant on magazine subscriptions, the Internet, and the books that I am able to buy - on an extremely limited Social Security income. Why should I buy books on a subject that no longer particularly interests me? I will bookmark this thread, and if ever I become interested in that aspect of Indian society, I will add them to the bib list I read/buy from.
Third point: I thought my comment on spelling - and you will please note that I did not then, and do not now, misspell even sven’s pseudonym or refer to him (“he” is correct, I trust) in any terms indicative of opinion - might have been slightly snarky. However, to the best of my knowledge, it’s absolutely the first time anyone on SDMB has ever misspelled my pseudo. Mine is far from the most difficult or unusual in either length or spelling. Perhaps I’m more sensitive about spelling because my realnym is unusual; most people either misspell or mispronounce it. I don’t usually correct people who mispronounce or misspell my name in person, because the mistakes are not malicious. However, in a forum which abounds with unusual names and spellings, most people either copy and paste, or use an abbreviation. I think I’ve been called TB here; I know it has happened in other electronic boards, and I don’t object to that in the least.
Fourth point: If any action has been taken by mods, there’s no indication in the original thread. Further, as of this writing, I have received no email from any SDMB authority (just rechecked).
If even sven is that easily offended, I’m sorry for him. However, this is definitely not the way to get an apology from me. An email would have received a different reception, I assure you, even though I feel I was the one who was first offended against (see above). And on other past occasions, if someone complains in a subsequent post, or sends me a private message complaining about something I’ve posted, I will publicly acknowledge it in the same place where the stipulated (real or imagined) offense occurred. If I felt it worth the effort, I could search, and provide at least one instance where I did that very thing here on SDMB.
I would not have responded to this thread - my normal habit is to ignore such stuff - except that on the SDMB it seems to be considered cowardly not to respond to a Pitting. If I were that, I’d be stupid to take such a pseudo, and IMO deserve whatever I received. I’ve used this pseudo for twenty years, BTW; I’m stinkin’ proud, and will never try to duck responsibility for anything I actually say. If I goof, I own up to it (most recent occasion here was a discussion of trypanosomes). If I insult, I make the best apology and amends I can. It has sometimes happened that I decide not to respond to an attack because I’m too angry to do so without blasting someone, but fortunately, that’s not often (it did happen a month or two ago in GQ). It’s usually easier to just ignore and forget. However, I will not forget this, and will in future decline to respond to anything asked or said by even sven. He need not fear further/future offense from me.
Clearly a Blake fan.
Heh Heh Heh… you ain’t missin’ much.
even sven is a she.
And she also can’t come up with good pit material. Pitting someone for one/two post/s? What the hell?
Another vote for “feeble pitting” here.
:: shrugs ::
Struck me as unnecessary to get your panties in a bunch about it. Like I said, you spell your name funny (like I’m one to talk :)) and it seems like misspellings are something we both have to live with.
Aren’t we taking this a bit too seriously? Get down off that cross, dear.
What do you mean “if”?
At least it wasn’t mispelled as tygerbryghtpenny
This entire thread broke my Lame-O-Meter™. It started to bleep, then shake, then it said:
ERROR: cannot divide by zero!
And then it erupted in a shower of sparks.
I think both of you should club together to buy me a new one.
And what is your realnym?
tygerbryght, you have a very hard-to-read style of writing. Maybe some of your misunderstandings come from people just not having a clue what you’re trying to say.
What’s hard to read about it?
