types of beer and carbs

Is it generally safe to say that porters and stouts will have more carbs than ‘lighter’ ales?

Is there a range of carbs I can look for as a resource? I think I can say that carbohydrates in beer range from about 2g per 12oz can (~0.5g/100ml) to 20g per 12 oz can (~6g/100ml).

without some corroborating citation though, I’m not extremely confident about my numbers. I’ve seen some charts on the internet but those are for typical macrobrews. I’m looking for a more encompasing generalization that would include beers made by smaller companies in multiple parts of the world.

Is 2g to 20g a pretty good general guess? I’d think there may be some that go higher.

I’ve looked for carb counts for a lot of beers, and like you said, for smaller/local/microbrews, it’s hard to find. I’m an insulin-dependent diabetic, and need carb counts to use to figure out how much insulin I need, so through trial and error I’ve settled on 1 carb per ounce for most microbrews. I’m not saying that’s perfect, but it seems to work for me.

For mass-market lighter beers, it can be much less, as Telemark’s links show, and bigger beers - fruit beers, etc - can go much higher. But your average IPA/ESB/Wheat/etc. more or less follow the 1 carb/ounce rule from what I can tell.
