U.S. "Whose Line is it Anyway" appreciation thread!

It is interesting that nobody has mentioned the musical games (unless I missed it). I don’t like the musical ones either, yet there is a big cheer from the audience when they announce the Hoe Down (which I think is the worst game of the lot).

I don’t like the musical games. I also don’t find Wayne Brady very funny. Other than that it’s the funniest show on TV. If only I didn’t need to switch cable companies to watch it.

I like it whenever they have to do impressions – Ryan as Carol Channing is always hysterical – and so is Colin as Craig T. Nelson.

The episode that Robin Williams showed up on was quite memorable.

Also, while I’m not a huge Wayne Brady fan, he’s the only one who does well in the singing parts. His improv songs are generally funnier (and sound more natural to boot) than anyone else’s.

Is Carey still on the show?

Then I’m still not watching it.

His show I don’t mind; he’s supposed to be the star on his show. But on WLiiA, his gigantic ego (more massive than his gut, thicker than his glasses) just runs rampant over the entire show, and he’s painfully unfunny. It got so I couldn’t take it. So now I don’t bother.

Funniest Wayne singing moment:

“HOWARD! How’d this song get so damn fast?”

Usually I find the singing parts a bit tiresome. (Though I must give credit to Wayne Brady. He looks like he’s having fun.)

But I love the infomercial setups with Colin and Ryan. The more they mess up, the more I laugh.

I’ve never had any problem with Drew Carey as host. Maybe if I’d been familiar with the British version, I’d feel differently.

When is it on? I used to watch the US version consistently on Thurs. but then it seemed to get moved around, sometimes on Wed., sometimes on neither. I stopped keeping up. (BTW, big, huge fan here, of many years, despite not knowing when it’s on).

I love “green screen”, “film noir”, “the one where 2 audience members make the sound effects when prompted (perhaps called “sound effects”?)”, “party quirks”, “film and theatre styles” (though “porno” gets a bit cliched with someone always bending over), gosh there are many.

some moments: in a game of “super heroes” on ryan’s entrance chip names him something to the effect of “panicked, ski lift, puppet-boy”. If that moment, where you wondered how the heck he was going to pull that one off, wasn’t funny enough, he then pulls it off. ROTF!!!

Colin’s “green screen” game where the screen was showing clips of himself.
“So Colin, how did this all start?”
Colin: “It all started with a really bad bald joke”.

I think from the old Clive show:
In “party quirks” ryan’s quirk is something like “gets really excited at the most mundane things”.
Man, when he walked through the door, I was reaching for my inhaler.

I still have not seen the Robin Williams episode, and I once started a thread (before it happened), about how I would love to see him sit in on the show. :frowning:

No problems with Drew at all for me.

next funniest moment is when someone points out that Wayne spelled Howard “Horward” , or some such nonsense.

Another great Wayne Brady moment – he’s doing “Songs of the Exterminator” and is given Eartha Kitt. He ends up writhing around on the piano purring about “the mouse in the house.” I was in pain I was laughing so hard.

ABC: Fridays, 9pm
Family Channel: 10 & 10:30pm weeknights (when not running Christmas or Halloween or any other specials)
Comedy Central has the UK version at 9 and 9:30am weekdays, plus a 26-episode marathon for New Years Day starting at 8:30am, preceded by what appears to be a best-of show.

All times Eastern.

Best scenes ever:

  1. Ryan’s “Foal being born.”

  2. The “Chris” song done in “African Chant”, if for nothing but learning that Colin and Ryan have no rhythm to speak of, and hearing Wayne protest “Why I gotta do the African chant?”

  3. Wayne, again, improving a song about toast…and pretending to be an entire gospel choir in the process.

  4. Three Headed Broadway Star song, “You are my Butter-stick.” In particular, when Ryan couldn’t think of anything for his line and had to hum…

What is that game called when they selct an audience member to read lines off a card when prompted? There was one time when they selected a teenager to do that, and the scene was “on the Titanic, (audience member) is being drawn nude by Ryan when (A.M)'s fiance walks in”. I loved that!

Fav. games: Scenes from a hat (especially the ‘grafitti on the whose line toilet stalls’ one); green screen

least fav: music ones

cast member: Ryan

It took some thinking, but I’ve finally come up with my favorite Who’s Line moments. Both were from the British show:

  1. The Colin Hoe-Down. HILARIOUS! I don’t normally like Hoe-Downs, but I make an exception for this one.

  2. Ryan’s John Wayne impression, PPPil-grim!

[great big f’ing hijack]

I don’t believe even half the stuff you see on these shows is truely improvised. While I’ll admit that the comedians are very talented and entertaining, I think that they go over a lot of the so-called ‘suggestions’ with the host beforehand. And by go over I mean pre-write sketches (or at least ideas) for them

I’m not saying its ‘50s game show rigged’. They don’t have a secret, preset, word for word script for everything.

But I do think its ‘Junk Yard Wars rigged’. The supposedly improvised material is arranged ahead of time to insure a successful show.

** Hail Ants**,

I don’t think the show is faked in anyway. IIRC the taping of a show lasts a couple of hours and then they just broadcast the 30 minutes of stuff that works.

I think the cast just knows each other well enough that improv becomes easy. (I played in a bunch of bands and after a while we could just improvise. We knew what to expect)

At the same time I have seen Robin Williams and Billy Connolly(SP? he is probably the funniest man on the planet) live and it was apparent that they were doing improv. Watching Williams is a brillant insight into an over active mind.

I guess the great thing about this show is seeing Colin Mockrie and Ryan S pulling off a seemingly impossible scenario–like, Eskimo neo-nazis (they probably haven’t done this, but they COULD). Fave actor: Ryan Stiles. Because: Weatherman as a sumo wrestler, weatherman stranded on an island, and weatherman killing everyone else on the news channel. I practically suffocate myself laughing at this stuff.

A specific great moment: Ryan and Colin completely redo a scene that Wayne and The Guest just did. I’d like to watch their reaction when they see a tape of the original scene.

Best unplanned moment: “CD Collection” game where Ryan actually lost control and couldn’t stop laughing at Colin. When he spoke he was hoarse. The music selection turned out, Secretly Listening to Operatic stars Gargling Before Performance.

Can you tell me what is different with the British version? A few years ago, and on the rerun marathon, the show’s host was a quiet serious dull guy. He spoke quietly and fast, describing the upcoming games with too many words.

Is the other version censored? The Hoe-down and the Dating Game have gone uninterrupted while they say words like “penis,” but right after that they will censor some thing. I hate this. Censorship I mean.

"The [beep] not in your [beep], it’s in [beep]. — [beep]

Another afficionado here. . .

My favorite moment: Two middle aged ladies were doing the sounds and Colin and Ryan were acting out a skit. Ryan goes to ‘hit a nail’ and about two seconds later, the giggling ladies went “whack”. Then they asked something about a cow, and the ladies went “quack quack . . .” [sub]My best recollections. So sue me. [/sub]

Aaah, yes. Seeaattttlllle Washington.

Tripler
However, “Props” is my favorite.

Family Channel ran the 100th Ep. with Drew Carey last night. I could have sworn that Wayne got a “fuck” past the censors during Show Stopping Number.

I love the “Standing, Sitting and Leaning (or Lying)” skits. They may only be on the British version. I nearly pee my pants every time.
