(Be grateful I didn’t make you go through the cheesy flash entry page. I didn’t figure out it was a website about a car until someone told me. I thought it was some sort of music download place.)
Ugh. Like a shoebox on matchbox wheels. “The bbX isn’t a van or a wagon. It’s not another SUV. It’s an urban conveyance.” Mm-hmm. Did they have to make it so square? And tiny baby wheels, and 2" off the ground! You’ll scrape the undercarriage on a speed bump. I thought Pontiac’s “slap-body-cladding-on-everything” styles were bad, but Toyota has just beaten them for the Title of Ugliest Car Maker.
Ugh. This was so bad I didn’t want to spend any more time than necessary on the site.
So I didn’t realize this was a Toyota vehicle. Good Lord, I love Toyota, but this??
What’s up with that black interior with blue highlighting? I was hoping it was just some cutesy graphic trick in the pictures, but I have a strange, sad, sinking feeling that this is what it indeed looks like.
I still think the Aztek is about the ugliest thing out there. But this is not too far off.
The very first thing I read on that page was “Is image important?” Then I saw the car. All I can say is that anyone who cares about their image won’t be driving that monstrosity.
Called my husband in to look at it - his reaction: “That’s ugly - what is it?” Are they taking over boxy now that Volvo is getting a bit more streamlined??
The only think I liked was the sound system. Did you see those speakers? Of course, no way in HELL would that be standerd, and even then, it doesn’t make up for a complete lack of anything else even remotley nice looking.
From what I’ve been able to gather, Toyota intends to attempt to replicate what they did when they spun off Lexus as a separate nameplate, with this that is so far known as Scion (I pray they get a new name, that will not sell). Their target being apparently the kind of people that will be interested in referring to an automobile as an “urban conveyance” (isn’t that a streetcar, anyway?).
Apparently the Toyota Matrix is a sort of trial balloon. If you look further at the above page, you’ll see the Scion ccX looks like a 2-door Matrix. And guess what GM division sells the American-branded “twin” of the Matrix? Pontiac (the Vibe).
So my guess is that whoever is the drug fiend that has been hanging around Pontiac’s design division for a decade has now turned on someone at Toyota to whatever hazardous chemical he has been abusing.
I’ll be the first to admit that I know nothing at all about cars… but that thing is just hideous. The only cars whose names I seem to catch are the ugly ones… that is getting very close to the level of an Aztek and it scares me.
When I clicked on the thread, I was definitely thinking of the Aztek. I went to the site and nearly died. Also, I think the Ford Focus is pretty bad. All of them are too… stupid.
And yes, I’ll have to agree with the fact that “the box” looks like a toaster…
There are cars very similar to this (in shape and appearance) in the Gran Turismo series of driving games. One of them is the Mazda Demio, and another is made by Suzuki by I forget its name.
They are ugly as poop, have a measly 90-some horsepower, are useful only in the races limited to just them, and are sometimes the only car you can afford early on. AFAIK they have never been sold in the U.S. and are the bane of gamers everywhere who want to know why this overgrown golf carts are in the game instead of more American muscle cars.
