Uh-oh, performance issues on straightDope.com? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

I was also having a problem today but briefly. I mean, for a span of minutes the whole site would not load at all. No errors, it just was loading and loading and loading… Other sites were fine.

Then it was fine again.

Haven’t seen any problems in the last 4 days. But I’m in Europe, so I might be using it at a different time.

Yeah, a brief glitch. I assumed it was something I did.

Sounds very much like a local issue or there would be more reports of problems.

Except that there are reports from (at least) New York State and Florida. So it would have to be a pretty broad definition of “local”.

They don’t have to be the same problem. There’s one screen shot showing a time, nothing else tells us when these problems happened and no reason to think they are related.

I was back in Washington State when I had a problem yesterday.

It’s possible that this is a coincidence, that just a few people are having issues unrelated to each other and nobody would be talking about it if this thread wasn’t here.

I’ll say for my part, that this is the first time I’ve seen this specific behavior on this site since moving to Discourse. In my case the site won’t work, and there are no errors, and other sites work. Usually if this site has a problem there will be a notification, but not now.

The problems I’ve seen have all been brief though. Always less than an hour. Nothing like vB.

The problem with this specific page not responding happened a few minutes before I posted it.

The problem with slow loading happened repeatedly over at least a couple of days previous to that day, at multiple times.

It might indeed just be a coincidence. But if it’s not a coincidence, we won’t find out what it is if nobody mentions it.

If all sites had been loading at a crawl, I would have put it down to my internet connection, which sometimes does that. But other sites appeared to be loading normally. (That also to me argues against it being a problem caused by storms or other local problem connections; wouldn’t those affect other sites also? Unless, of course, the local problem is occuring wherever Discourse is hosting this; though it seems it would have to be something that’s only affecting some users, and only at some times.)

Discourse is almost certainly using a Content Distribution Network (CDN) which forward-stages the content of websites in regional caching servers. Hence, users in one region could be seeing issues caused by CDN node performance when other users attached through other CDN nodes might see no such issues.

Thanks; I’m fairly clueless in such matters.

How large an area is a “region” likely to be?

I don’t have the answer, since I don’t know what CDN provider Discourse contracted with. I would speculate on a state or city level.

Probably not both New York and Florida, then.

yes, for last week or 2, popup says page not connecting and keeps repeating error; reason is below

Error code: RESULT_CODE_HUNG

And California.

Several times today. Connecticut.

Slow-To-Connect-Icut?

I got this yesterday. Nothing back for several minutes, and finally the Cloudflare (?) rainbow dots displayed for at least 15 minutes. I gave up.

I have been having problems loading most of my sites when I first open Firefox (IIRC that started after a Windows 10 update a couple of months ago). But yesterday the SDMB would not load at all.

I forgot to add this. Even with the apparent no-response, I did reach the SDMB in some manner, because it updated my last visited date as 11/5.

Not Cloudflare.

Board is painfully slow for me today and yesterday – pages loading slowly, slow response to clicking on anything, typing in reply box takes some time to show up. Pages on other sites seem to behave normally.
