Apparently “Two Princes.” I mean, I guess? It’s just a 3-chord rock song, like thousands of others, based on the I, IV, and V. The Spin Doctors threw in a vi chord, to make it a classic 4-chord pop song, like thousands of others. (And they would’ve managed that extra chord if they wanted it, as it’s just an Em for their song in their key (G), which is one of the easiest guitar chords to play.)
No list of annoying pop songs is complete without this version of Hooked on a Feeling. The annoying part is that the cool opening with the Ooga Chakas turns into annoying glurge.
There wasn’t a whole lot of backlash against the song in the 80s. They were happy to play it on the radio, and I don’t remember a whole lot of people saying it sucked. Maybe some music critics didn’t like it, but I can’t recall people making fun of the song. I think talking about terrible it was has turned into some popular affectation. It’s not my favorite song, I’ll never choose to listen to it, but when it comes on the radio it doens’t particularly bother me.
The list the OP linked to is pretty crummy. There are a lot of songs I actively like. 500 Miles is a good song. “Ice Ice, Baby” is tolerable because I remember it coming out when I was a freshman in high school. But even the songs on the list I don’t care for aren’t really annoying to me. Any list of annoying songs that includes “Zombie” by the Cranberries has zero credibility.
I didn’t read the whole thread but a search tells me nobody mentioned Ricky Martin’s “Living La Vida Loca”. That’s purely and simply one of the greatest pop songs of all time. And the list does not mention one word of criticism to warrant its inclusion.
I know lists like this are created just to get people to read them so they can disagree. They need to have some integrity nevertheless. This has none. Bah humbug.
That was weird-- I clicked on the YT video in your first post, it was playing, then it cut off after a few seconds. Then I saw the video disappeared from that post. I watched the clip in its entirety in your second post. What happened the first time?
I erred by editing my post. Once I saved the edit, Discourse would no longer allow the embedded video. The stupid part is that I knew it would happen and did it anyway.
Her take was fairly educational, extremely positive, and caused me to give attention to every inflection in the singing — which was definitely worthwhile.
