UK Autumn/Winter Dopefest

As long as you don’t say she’s a lesbian; I seem to recall that you’re the one who decides that sort of thing around here.

As to food: should I bring peanut butter cookies (as per jjimm’s fine recipe), or have we achieved a sufficiency in the baked goods department?

Slight hijack but I’ve been wondering . . .

Gyrate does your location refer to a certain area of Sarf London with a struggling but noble football team?

Yes indeedy. I’m down the less fashionable end of Upper Norwood, about 15-20 minutes walk from Selhurst Park. Only been there once, though, and that was for a Wimbledon-West Brom match. They were giving away tickets, and after the match I could see why; I’ve seen girls high school teams that played better football. 1-0 to West Brom on a Wimbledon own goal. But I digress.

I think that’s a very good idea. There is no such thing as sufficient baked goods.

Regarding this ‘Area 1’ bit…

I know which bit they are talking about, and I know it’s easy to miss. The Silver Cross is pretty big, by London pub standards! So… just in case it’s helpful, let’s revise the directions.

The Silver Cross itself is easy enough to find if you can find Trafalgar Square (TS).

Nearest and most convenient tube and rail station is Charing X.

There’s a big street south of TS which is called Whitehall. It’s got the Whitehall Theatre on it, and even from TS you can see the Theatre’s marquee jutting out from the wall. Go down Whitehall, and the Silver Cross is about 100 yards along on your left. Almost, but not quite, opposite the Theatre.

The first set of doors you come to are the doors most people use. However, just go along the street a little bit more and you will come to the second set of doors. Go in there. Either straight ahead of you, or to the right and straight ahead, (can’t quite remember) you’ll see a small set of stairs leading up to a sectioned-off wrea which has (from recall) about three tables in it. That’s ‘Area 1’. So if we end up in Area 1, that’s where we will be.

Technically, it is behind the bar, but it does have its own very convenient serving hatch to save people having to go around to the front.

If you go in through the main doors (the first set you come to from the TS end) then stay on the same level, and aim to head to your right and behind the bar. Eventually, no matter how clueless or geographically challenged you are, you’ll see the small set of steps leading up to the sectioned-off area.

I say “if” we end up there, because what they told Angua about the downstairs bit is standard Siver Cross smoke and mirrors. They always open the downstairs section if there are enough punters to make it worthwhile, and never do otherwise. They just don’t want to give a promise to do so ahead of time. If business picks up, and this is a popular pub on a Saturday evening in London during cold weather, then they’ll open up the downstairs section as usual. If this happens, we may well decide to migrate en masse to our usual downstairs section, just because it’s slightly roomier and cosier.

First-timers may want to grab the mobile number of someone else who is def. going to be there, just as a safeguard.

On which note, should anyone want my mobile number, email me at the address in my profile.

What time, guys?

2pm onwards.

And for those of you who can’t get enough of Dopefests, or for whom November 27 isn’t convenient, there’s always the third-weekend of January DutchDope.

[/subtle hint]

Shall I bump this? Do you know; I think I might.
Rightyho, boys and girls, not long to go now and I wouldn’t want any of the Festal Virgins to think that out of sight is out of mind. O dearie me no. Be there or be square.

Although, as both Angua and Gyrate have promised mine pies, Eva’s rugelach and jjimm’s peanut butter wotsits, I think while not being there will make you square; actually being there might make you round.

Paul; - did you get hold of Bib in the end? Is he coming?

Don’t know if Bib’s in or not, he didn’t reply to my text message. Having said that, the tour of the South Bank we did in the Summer with Morgyn he came to, after not replying to me, so I reckon its a case of if he’s there he’s there.

If anybody needs my mobile in case they can’t get in touch with anyone else etc, my e-mails on my profile too. I’ll be there for about 2ish. For some reason even with maps I always fuck up getting to the Silver Cross - I end up behind it or parallel. Fuck knows why.

As you might have noticed – Winter LonDope 2004 is almost upon us! Next Saturday in fact. Yay!

So, anymore takers?

I will be there. I’m the 80s throwback. You’ll recognize me  in my shellsuit and moonboots.

How many of us will there be?

You’ve got 7 rounds of questions with one of those picture rounds
Not a name the celebrity cos I fail at them. Miserably. I got 4 out of 50 last time.
I identified Doris Day as Frank Spencer and Rachel Stevens as James Hunt :frowning:

Makes squeaky noise only audible to bats.

I R excited.

I’m not giving my mobile number to anyone in need of directions, because frankly, if you rely on me for directions, you’re in big trouble. And probably on that area of the map marked: “Here Be Dragons.”

Have fun and stay out of trouble, kids! And is someone going to send me a NADS calendar? What’s the status of the NADS calendar, for that matter?

Darnit, I wish I could join you guys like I did last year. I’m not at all sorry about the reason why I can’t, but if the timing of starting the new job could have been just a little bit different…

You’d better post lots of photos!

Iceland will be there. Bring him hugs
(and young nubile daughters)

(16+ of course)

I’ll bring works digital camera then throw the pics at either photobucket or Tir to stick on the website. Having said that, I think we’re still waiting for pics from last year on that too.

I wonder if Iceland Blue’s going to be there…

Random thought that’s just crossed my mind – the Silver Cross, like most other Central London pubs has a 18+ age policy, doesn’t it?

For a private function it’d be OK surely…And AFAIK accompanied children are allowed if they’re eating with parents or something similar.
As long as they don’t attempt to consume alkyhol…

If not,I can smuggle a couple of young’uns in

Its not really a private function – we’ve basically just asked for them to reserve us a bit of space, whilst we consume alcohol in their esrtwhile establishment. Plus, we will be there all day – hardle ‘eating with parents’. I honestly can’t remember what the policy of the Silver Cross actually is, but if it is like most of the other pubs in that area, it may well be strictly 18+. Can someone else who’s been there lots (and wasn’t drunk, ‘distracted’, and having to be dragged out of there the last time they were there), clarify this? I really don’t want us to be chucked out!
