Nobody is going to argue that wasn’t a demolition by Liverpool but if you’re going to face that, best to do it with a 7 (4) point lead and a game in hand. Terrible game by Man U.
And now Posh have had their defender, whose just come back from injury, sent off after 7 minutes…
Shakes head I think this might end up being a bad day…
That was fucking amazing. Right up there with my favourite football matches of all time. I actually got a bit worried when Rio nearly turned into his own net - 5-1 at Old Trafford and a Rio own goal would’ve had me seriously questioning whether I was actually awake.
I still don’t think we’ll overhaul them, but we’ve at least made the end of the season interesting again.
And in what is becoming Dog Bites Man news, Stoke have granted Everton a 2 - 0 lead, then decided to actually start playing the game, and are now down 2 - 1 and making a real push, so much so that Everton are hardly out of their own end, and should have been picking the ball out of the back of their net a second time.
Well Posh won despite being down to 10 men after 7 mins. Millwall lost, so now they can no longer overtake Posh by winning their games in hand. That only leaves MK Dons who won 5-2. I really can’t see the Dons dropping 5 points from their 3 games in hand.
Yup, Man Utd got a tatering today, but I’d rather it happen now in a game we could afford to lose, than in either of our two previous games. And this should give us the kick up our arses we need to see out the season in style, hopefully.
I’d be careful of hoping for too much on a week where United have slipped up; Chelsea will be thinking they are in a “must win” situation, both to help catch United and to avoid giving Liverpool a lifeline on 2d place.
If City do well, it may be the clearest sign yet that they are on a path to greater glory.
Well, it was really. If we hadn’t shipped two to Boro, we’d have been breathing down their necks and the chase would really be on. As it is, Fergie doesn’t even have to spin up the hairdryer - he just needs to remind his team they’ve still got a potential seven point lead.
Sure, if they do somehow lose the league then people will point at that match as the turning point, but they’ve got a lot of buggering up to do for that to happen.
Some random thoughts on the weekend football: 4-1 is a hell of a scoreline, at OT to boot. V impressive from the RS I must say.
Villa’s bottle goes yet again today, beaten by Spurs at home. Their next games are Man U, Liverpool, then a visit from Everton. At which point we could well have more points then them.
I watched the Scottish cup today, Celtic won 2-0 AET. If you’ve not seen much Scottish football recently you might be surprised how the standard of the old firm has dropped - two poor teams playing ale-house football. There’s not the money there was in the SPL and the quality players aren’t at the old firm these days. Aiden McGeedy (sp?) for Celtic is a good Scottish / Irish player. I saw a similarly skilled Scotsman fail in the prem watching James McFadden play for Everton. McGeedy has some pace though, and might be a success should he ever move.
There was an excellent (and very sad) article in the Observer today about the Hillsborough disaster - link here for anyone that is interested.
I had a feeling we’d thump Blackburn - the Roma victory really lifted the mood at Arsenal and Arshavin has been going from strength to strength. Could have been at least 8 if Bendtner could fucking finish.
I also suspected that Tottenham might take Villa. Villa have been as shakey as we have recently but it hasn’t been getting the media attention (because our lack of form has been seen as the “bigger” news). Still a strange feeling cheering a Spurs win though!
Fourth place is now very much ours to lose - but that’s something we’re fully capable of doing so I think it’ll still come down to the wire as to who gets that final Champions League spot.
The Man Utd game was a great one, but without trying to take anything away from the 'Pool, it was a bit of a fluke - I really can’t see Man Utd bottling their run in.
See details of the Europa league are being talked about now. Next year, if your team was to win it, they would play a whopping SEVENTEEN games! And that’s with automatic qualification, it would be even more games if you needed a further round of qualification. It will be like the Long fucking March.
I can see the hardcore of supporters actually liking this format, as more away fixtures means more European travel which is a big part of suppport for some. For most it will be just more dross football to watch that erodes your team’s performances in the prem.
Aye, it’s hard to believe they could actually have made the UEFA Cup worse, but they’ve found a way. Three qualifying rounds, one playoff round, a 48-team group stage that gets rid of 24 teams (only for 8 more CL rejects to join), and four knockout rounds before the final.
Utterly insane - I suppose the best you can say is that at least it’s now aptly named. Any side wishing to seriously compete in it will literally need a squad and a half.
