UK Parliament Attack

Very early, details are sketchy. Two dead.

Yeah, two people dead and a cop stabbed. Twelve other people have injuries after being run over. Crazy. The assailant was thankfully apprehended after being shot by police, so the worst seems to be over by now.

The assailant is described as “Asian”. Which doesn’t mean in the UK what it means in the US.

One woman has been rescued from the river below Westminster Bridge, but with serious injuries. It’s not yet known if she jumped to escape the vehicle on the pavement, or whether she was knocked over the railing. Please don’t ever link an article to The Mirror again, not only because it is shit attempts at sensationalistic journalism but also because of the site spawning multiple modal popups and separate windows trying to advertise products and services of questionable legality.

Ad blockers do no stop in window modal ads, and in any case, the the Mirror is just about World Weekly News in accuracy and credibility.

I thought that crap stopped years ago.

If it’s a work computer, he probably can’t.

Besides, that’s no excuse for sites pulling that crap.

Four dead, including a policeman and the attacker. At least 20 injured. Met press conference just now.

So, what does “Asian” mean in the UK?

Indian or Pakistani, usually.

I believe the UK uses a more expansive (and hence accurate) definition - Asian includes the Indian sub-continent, while most American’s would read Asian as Chinese/Japanese/Korean/Vietnamese.

In the UK, “Asian” typically means “South Asian” (i.e., the Indian subcontinent). As I understand it, the British census (for example) draws a distinction between “Asian” and “Chinese.” In the United States, “Asian” will typically refer to “Southeast Asian” (although I think it officially includes people from the Indian subcontinent).

I don’t know how the British would classify Middle Easterners.

Yes, and Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

The BBC are now reporting four dead.

Well, then, read the link before you click on it. It very clearly says “mirror.co.uk”, so it should be easy enough to avoid.

Thanks for asking nicely at least. Is there a better source or are you primarily not interested?

Lone wolf with mental health issues … as usual

In the context of early media reports in cases like this, it sometimes means nothing very much more than "brown but not black’
