Since this zombie has been brought back from the undead, Gilligan is an actual surname. Producer Sherwood Schwartz said he picked it at random from the L.A. phone book. He also stated that Gilligan’s first name was Willy, although he was never called that on the show.
Bob Denver had a different take on it. He thought the character’s name was Gil Egan, and reasoned that since everybody was always yelling at Gilligan, they ran the two names together so they sounded like one.
