Unexpected Enthusiasm for Harris?

:point_right:Word for word I never expected it either.

VP pick wil be key. Who do you favor?

Another one here (this is the first swing state poll I’ve seen like this, and it’s in Pennsylvania maybe the most important!). Tied without third party but Harris 2 points ahead with RFK!

I really hope for my physical and psychological well being it’s not close, but if it is (and it will likely be  ) It would be a hilarious comeuppance for the GOP if co-opting the lunatic anti-vax fringe (and you know killing 100s of thousands of American with COVID), and then convincing RFK jnr to run as a spoiler, is the reason they lose.

The sweetest thing about this whole election cycle was Nosferatu Miller crying about how the Dems tricked them into spending all their money fighting Joe, only to have him pull the switcheroo. And they can’t say it was some kind of a coup when Joe voluntarily withdrew. It was cute when they pretended to be concerned about Biden lovers being denied their candidate.

Countdown before some unenthusiastic local messes with it…

A post was merged into an existing topic: Harris VP choice as she is the likely, presumptive nominee

The campaign and Democrats in Congress have been beating that drum endlessly to no avail. I don’t know why that isn’t moving the needle.

I was having dinner with someone a couple weeks ago and was surprised to find out that she was MAGA. The dinner went fine with no one throwing anything or yelling but I do remember being surprised that she had absolutely zero knowledge of the bipartisan immigration bill that Trump killed. She didn’t believe me when I mentioned it. And she is an intelligent woman with a great job that requires intelligence to be good at (she’s an executive).

Not sure why Dems are so bad at getting this news out. It’s not a secret.

Because the news outlets such people follow deliberately suppress it.

I think that this is the primary issue. Conservative news outlets, and conservative politicians, have spent the last 20+ years instructing their followers that no other news sources are valid.

I believe turnout is going to be a decisive factor in this election. It’s not that the Right doesn’t want to turn out for a fascist – obviously they do – but the Undecided, the Independent, the Dunno If I’ll Even Bother voters, who are now the only deciders in national elections, who will turn them out? There have been a lot of reports of how many right leaning people didn’t want to vote for Trump again, but there was no alternative. Much of the distaste was not for his politics but for him personally – the endless circus, the endless scandals. And he’s not going away. So a galvanized Democratic voter bloc excited to get to the polls might be a much bigger factor than ordinarily.

It’s like trying to tell my MAGA relatives that the US is a net oil exporter, and producing the most oil in its history. They won’t hear it from their preferred sources, and they simply won’t believe it.

When showed the EIA.gov website they simply declare it government lies and ask why gas is $3.50 / gal.

Dumb. I know.
(And one of them is a successful lawyer; which makes me think he does know, deep down inside, but it’s easier to pretend he doesn’t)

Yep yep yep. I’m seeing women and young people who were unenthusiastic before suddenly being very interested in voting. Young people today, like all young people before them, are very very lazy. Hopefully the Dems can keep their attention for the next 100 days (or fewer - absentee/mail-in/dropbox voting starts some time in October). The “dank memes” that are coming out now are doing a pretty good job so far.

:face_with_raised_eyebrow: What do your relatives [del]think[/del] believe it should be?

There seems to be a strange entitlement mentality among a lot of Americans that gas ought to be around $1.50/gal

It’s like that with a lot of MAGAts. They limit themselves to the pro-Trump media, and literally never hear any of the bad stuff about him.

I had this a few weeks ago. There’s a Trump supporter at my local pub (we’re Canadian, btw, so extra weird), who also happens to be one of the biggest union guys at the pub. He was going on about how unions had to go on strike every now and then to keep the bosses in line. So I asked him, if he was such a big advocate for workers, why did he support Trump, who is notorious for screwing over his workers?

He had literally never heard about Trump refusing to pay people, and telling them to sue him if they didn’t like it. And he found lazy excuses to not look at any link I sent him to try to show him the truth.

In a previous polling thread, I voted that I reluctantly thought it unlikely that Harris could win.

I stand corrected.

In all honesty I understand it.

She was led to believe that the Republicans legitimately want to secure the border because they say so all the time, and say the Democrats don’t want to. They claim that Democrats are in favor of open borders. If she does not expose herself to much news outside of right wing sources, which is common for someone with conservative political beliefs, she would probably not be aware of it. And if someone at a dinner says something that sounds so outlandish and counter to everything you’ve been led to believe, that really doesn’t make any sense at all, of course she wouldn’t believe it. From her perspective, she’d be foolish to believe it.

Now, if afterward she saw information about it from a neutral news source, maybe she’d believe it. And she might even rationalize it by saying that yes, the Republicans did block a border security bill, but as distasteful as that is, it was a necessary evil because it’s important that Trump get elected so that the Republicans can be in charge and institute true, effective border control. That might not make sense to you or I, but I assure you that it wouldn’t be difficult to make such a rationalization if you were already in that mindset to begin with.

I think the excuse I see more often than not is the talking point of “well, that bill had too much money going to Ukraine”. Of course, they can’t ever tell you how much money was earmarked for Ukraine relief, but they’re just parroting whatever Hannity told them to say.

37¢ a gallon like it was when I first started driving!
