My RW acquaintances point to gas prices in April of 2020, when the price dipped to about a dollar a gallon. Didn’t matter of course, that that was in the midst of the pandemic when our entire society was shut down.
She continues to do well in battle ground states.
Hey, The Dude and Luke Skywalker have both endorsed Harris!
It seems Harris is going after this topic. I LOVE that she/the Dems have decided to not concede on the topic and are willing to fight over it.
That’s not a blowout, and it’s also missing ten votes.
That would, by historical standards, be a CLOSE election.
She did exactly as we hoped-
She touted her role as a California attorney general who prosecuted transnational gangs, drug cartels and human traffickers, then blamed Trump for “tanking” this year’s bipartisan border bill on Capitol Hill “because he thought it would help him win an election.”
“Donald Trump does not care about border security, he only cares about himself,” Harris said, adding that she would work to pass the bill as president… The Harris campaign earlier Tuesday previewed how it will be responding to Trump’s attacks falsely casting her as the administration’s “border czar” with a new 50-second campaign video. It paints Trump as unserious on border security and cites his decision to scuttle the bipartisan immigration deal that included some of the toughest border security measures in recent memory.
“Kamala Harris supports increasing the number of Border Patrol agents. Donald Trump blocked a bill to increase the number of Border Patrol agents,”
(Quote from article that DrDeth was quoting, referring to Harris as “she”.)
I really hope not. The main thing that bill was good for was blunting Republican attacks; otherwise it gives the forces of American nativism entirely too much of what they want.
If Republicans want to get some of that border security reform, they should pair it with some solid immigration reform, maybe the DREAM Act or something similar. Otherwise, you’re just giving the Republicans what they were looking all along after they’ve lost the election.
This is the kind of thing that can dampen enthusiasm for Harris among the immigation-activist left. I sure hope they can see that even a compromising President Harris would be better for them that Trump Administration 2.0.
This.
It’s pretty much all you need to know. Trump supporters do not know factual information because they are being shielded from it, and also because they deliberately avoid anything that reports the truth.
It hit 3.00 gal, out here in St Louis, during the GW Bush administration, and remained in that range, within .50 or so, ever since. It has never been as low as 1.50, except during the pandemic, but that was due to less driving bc of pandemic, and prices were lowered as a result, as they were everywhere. Of course, Trump took credit for all that, but it was out of his control. If he becomes President, I do not foresee lower gas prices; in fact, they will increase bc his economic policies are awful and that will influence all prices. If he and his ilk remain in power, they won’t give a damn about gas prices, or about anything else. Oil companies are private and they will do as they wish, and they will have someone in the WH who will cheer them on…as long as he gets a cut of the profits.
Also worth noting that Trump explicitly asked the Saudis and Russians to cut production in order to drive up prices - and they did.

I sure hope they can see that even a compromising President Harris would be better for them that Trump Administration 2.0
I think that what she can get is going to depend on whether she can not only win, but pull the House and Senate with her.
If she can, I’d expect a lot better bill than that one – and I doubt Harris will refuse to sign it if Congress sends it to her. If she can’t, that one may be the best she can get. But for now, pointing out that Trump blocked them from getting what they want may indeed be really useful in campaigning.

I really hope not. The main thing that bill was good for was blunting Republican attacks; otherwise it gives the forces of American nativism entirely too much of what they want.
True, you make a point- the 'border crisis" is a 100% made up isse by the bigots in the GOP. There is no cris, altho of course there are minor issues.

Trump supporters do not know factual information because they are being shielded from it, and also because they deliberately avoid anything that reports the truth.
Not just trump supporters- mainstream media loves to report bad news, and they love stories about crime out of control (it isnt) or high prices due to inflation.

It’s a crisis for some of the people trying to get in, and for some of the people deported and the families of such people. It’s not an actual crisis for the USA, no.
Summary

It’s a crisis for some of the people trying to get in, and for some of the people deported and the families of such people.
Much like with the war on drugs, most of the negatives are due to the war itself, not inherent problems with drugs, or immigrants, themselves.
If American society would allow the American government to officially realize that immigrants, both permanent and temporary, are valuable to the US, most of the issues at the border would be abated. Migrant workers could apply to enter legally, be screened, and then allowed to cross the border with little fuss, work for a few months, then go home, safe in the knowledge that they’ll be allowed to come back the next year.
Very few people would be using dangerous means of getting into the US like sneaking across a desert, if it were legal for them to cross normally. So the US could focus its border control on the actually dangerous people.

That is actually the best method.

Everyone, please stay on topic.
It is not staying on topic to reply to an off-topic post that the moderators haven’t moderated.
To bring this thread back to the topic, I’m impressed by the enthusiasm for Harris and I hope she can sustain it until Election Day.
What I am seeing so far that I think is good:
She’s responding to Trump’s attacks basically in real time and she has good responses.
She’s making lots of appearances all over the place and drawing big crowds.
She’s got good surrogates out there making the case for her as well.
She’s got a consistent narrative on Trump (“weird!”) that seems to be sticking.
She’s not afraid to call Trump a criminal.
She hasn’t had any real gaffes.
I think if she can sustain this momentum (by continuing to do the hard work necessary) she will cruise to victory. Are there other groups she needs to reach out to? Any states Biden wasn’t focused on where she can make some gains?
This campaign is a stark contrast between happy and hopeful and angry and foreboding.
I think this portends a solid victory for Harris (landslides being a thing of the past).

Are there other groups she needs to reach out to?
White men. The key to that, in my opinion, is to stress economic issues; the economy is on solid ground, and responsible governance leads to sustained growth.
