Uniformed Looters in Kansas

Well, I didn’t find anything in a search so here’s my thread.

UNBELIEVABLE! Well, not really, I guess. No matter how horrible the disaster, apparently there must be someone whose first idea is not “Let’s go help others!” but rather, “Let’s go help myself to others’ stuff!”

In the case of the town in Kansas destroyed recently by a tornado, four soldiers and a cop decided it’s a good spot for looting. The big twist for them is these idiots put on their uniforms to do it:

What can you say about people in service professions who abuse those whom they’re supposed to be serving?

Not to be left out, a couple of other folks had a “bright idea”:

Mods: I couldn’t think of a good thread title, so please feel free to edit it to one you think is appropriate.

You can say they are just a cross-section of us all…

When societal structure is removed, one response is to help others; the other response is “every man for himself.”

The veneer of civilization that separates us from testing The Lord of the Flies is not very thick. There are moments when the survivalists seem to have it right.

Why did four people all get the same idea at the same time? Were the soldiers a group? Has this sort of thing always happened, or is it new?

Society blows.

I came here because I thought the looters were uninformed, but no such luck.

My guess would be that stupidity and dishonesty are contagious.

I was hoping there was going to be some sort of looters uniform that everyone that wanted to loot had to wear for some reason.

Well the jerks in questions should be punished to the maximum extent allowed by Kansas laws. They betrayed the trust of the public and their duty. Not much else to say and no way to defend their actions.

It is oddly, timely considering last nights Simpsons episode with Homer, Moe, Apu and Skinner as Fireman that begin to loot the businesses they are saving.

Jim

I did, too. I figured they were stealing Betamaxes and beer past its sell-by date.

Would it be unfair of me to note that the military has lowered its standards for recruitment of late?

Clearly they got the idea from last night’s Simpsons. Simpsons obviously causes criminal behaviour, and must be banned for the good of the community.

Here’s a video of New Orleans cops looting a Wal-Mart after Hurricane Katrina.

And they weren’t the only post-Katrina police looters.

Maybe they’re just really into Jericho.

If I had been there, I’d have popped that smug fuck reporter in the face.

I read the whole OP, thinking that maybe they were uninformed because they looted a grocery store instead of a place with jewelry and electronics that were easier to fence.

Took me till the “mods” note at the bottom to realize what the title actually said.

Why? Because sometimes it breaks down? I mean without society, everyone would be looting everyone else all the time.

I just know I’m going to regret engaging this thought of yours, but what the fuck for? If it’s because you find it perfectly reasonable that everyone in that store at that time was there to get the staples of life that were otherwise completely unavailable to them by other means other than stealing, you might have had a point. If he was being an unmitigated dick to people that have no other way of surviving, yeah, I’ll give it to you.
That’s a pretty far stretch when the tape is filled with people taking high dollar items such as TV’s. How 'bout the kid riding a brand new bike around the store? Is it reasonable to say that he’s just getting a few minutes of joy in an otherwise bleak situation and he’s going to put the bike back as soon as his family has retrieved the milk and bread they came for because they were starving?

That’s a bit much to assume on my part, I’m sure. I’m just trying to flesh out the reason for your hostility to the reporter there. He really only engaged the police officer that was there…and it seems pretty clear to me that he caught her doing things she was not supposed to be doing.

VCO3’s bullshit claim anytime something pisses me off is “I’d kill that person” or “I’d beat that person up.”

Real life experiences suggests he’d pee his pants before actually starting a fight with someone.

Now come on, that probably is not true, he would probably just be perfectly quiet and walk away.
