Well, I didn’t find anything in a search so here’s my thread.
UNBELIEVABLE! Well, not really, I guess. No matter how horrible the disaster, apparently there must be someone whose first idea is not “Let’s go help others!” but rather, “Let’s go help myself to others’ stuff!”
In the case of the town in Kansas destroyed recently by a tornado, four soldiers and a cop decided it’s a good spot for looting. The big twist for them is these idiots put on their uniforms to do it:
What can you say about people in service professions who abuse those whom they’re supposed to be serving?
Not to be left out, a couple of other folks had a “bright idea”:
Mods: I couldn’t think of a good thread title, so please feel free to edit it to one you think is appropriate.
You can say they are just a cross-section of us all…
When societal structure is removed, one response is to help others; the other response is “every man for himself.”
The veneer of civilization that separates us from testing The Lord of the Flies is not very thick. There are moments when the survivalists seem to have it right.
Well the jerks in questions should be punished to the maximum extent allowed by Kansas laws. They betrayed the trust of the public and their duty. Not much else to say and no way to defend their actions.
It is oddly, timely considering last nights Simpsons episode with Homer, Moe, Apu and Skinner as Fireman that begin to loot the businesses they are saving.
I read the whole OP, thinking that maybe they were uninformed because they looted a grocery store instead of a place with jewelry and electronics that were easier to fence.
Took me till the “mods” note at the bottom to realize what the title actually said.
I just know I’m going to regret engaging this thought of yours, but what the fuck for? If it’s because you find it perfectly reasonable that everyone in that store at that time was there to get the staples of life that were otherwise completely unavailable to them by other means other than stealing, you might have had a point. If he was being an unmitigated dick to people that have no other way of surviving, yeah, I’ll give it to you.
That’s a pretty far stretch when the tape is filled with people taking high dollar items such as TV’s. How 'bout the kid riding a brand new bike around the store? Is it reasonable to say that he’s just getting a few minutes of joy in an otherwise bleak situation and he’s going to put the bike back as soon as his family has retrieved the milk and bread they came for because they were starving?
That’s a bit much to assume on my part, I’m sure. I’m just trying to flesh out the reason for your hostility to the reporter there. He really only engaged the police officer that was there…and it seems pretty clear to me that he caught her doing things she was not supposed to be doing.
