I installed IE 5 - my preferred browser - but the install crashed at the last moment.
IE 5 is not functioning mostly correct, but there are a couple of small but annoying issues.
How can I remove IE 5 so that I can reinstall it properly?
Attempts to reinstall from disc have not worked - it thinks IE is there and fine - and removing the IE folder from “program files” simply cripples many applications.
OS is Win98SE. Any comments much appreciated.
I once tried a thing called IEradicator - my experience of it was pretty positive - it uninstalls IE and unbuckles the IE integration with the windows shell. I found that Win98 worked a lot more smoothly afterwards.
But the standard warnings apply; it is a potentially dodgy procedure - do it at your own risk.
You should be able to go to Add/Remove Programs, select Microsoft Internet Explorer, click Remove, and have the option to Repair it. Or is it not listed in Add/Remove because the installation didn’t finish?
You could also install IE6. Tell it to archive your previous browser installation so you can remove it (IE6) later. If you don’t like IE6, then remove it as per the above paragraph except choose the “Revert to previous installation” option, the bottom one I think. This may fix IE5 for you.
I used their freeware product as well as their purchase product. Both I highly recommend for anyone still on 98. They remove ALL the IE4.0 instances in the OS as well as completely uninstall the browser. It makes the OS much stabler. I had one box that ran virtually non-stop (about a once a week reboot) for 3 years without a single crash, blue screen, lockup, or virtual memory error. Removing IE wasn’t the only thing I did to it, but it was the largest change I made to the box (I also changed the registry, and virtual memory settings, and refused to put buggy programs such as AOL or Real Player on the machine).
It will get rid of ANY IE problems you have right now. Though there are a couple of issues with it. Unfortunately, because it mucks with the OS (it has to, to remove IE from the system), a lot of applications will recognize your machine as running Win95 and not 98se. This means that a few applications will not install at all (anything higher than direct X 8.0a or mediaplayer 6.1(?) immediately spring to mind), while others may not install properly.
I believe that the IEradicator link provided above does nearly the same thing.
Your only other option then becomes to try and install IE6(which may fix the issue), or reinstall the entire OS.
