United Airlines lands on freeway?

Someone sent me this pic:

I think it’s fake. Did this really happen? Would the landing gear break off so easily? If the plane actually noticed engine trouble right before takeoff, wouldn’t they just circle around and land back on the runway? What do they need the pilot car for? Finally, do planes often land on freeways? I remember someone telling me that major highways had to have at least 1 mile of straight road for every 10 or so just in case.

It’s staged. It’s screen shots from a commercial for Jeep Cherokee. Think about it this way: if it was real, how’d they get all those close-up camera angles?

Well, first, the red/white/blue stripe pattern on a bare aluminum fuselage is part of American’s livery, not United’s.

Second, the landing gear is much stronger than a car.

Third, you’re right about planes with engine trouble. A CD-10 is perfectly capable of flying and landing with 1 out.

Planes do sometimes land on freeways, in extreme emergencies, but this wasn’t one.

It’s from an Ifilm.

Punoqllads is both correct and incorrect. It is stagged. It is not from an ad for Jeep.

Thanks guys. I knew it was fake. That 405 is one funny short though. I love the way it ends.
