Especially poignant since it’s really about the relationship between Elton John and his lyricist, Bernie Taupin.
Flavor of the Weak by American Hi-Fi
Her boyfriend
He don’t know
Anything about her
He’s too stoned
Nintendo
I wish that i could make her see
She’s just the flavor of the week
Water From The Moon
-Céline Dion
She’s so not my kind of music, but I love this song on an obsessive level. Good pick!
Don’t Stand So Close to Me - Police
I wouldn’t exactly call this ‘unrequited’ love - as it is apparent that both parties are definitely interested.
Hopefully, it was a case of unconsumated love though.
one of my favs:
I Got Id by Pearl Jam
“Rimini,” by Kipling. (Kindasorta.)
3 Doors Down - Kryptonite.
It’s the theme song for the relationship between my daughter’s mother and I. I’ve made it the ringtone when she calls. It’s desensitized me somewhat.
somewhat.
Am I the only one who hears the title of this thread to the tune of Three Dog Night’s “Old Fashioned Love Song”?
Well, you might have been, until just now
Angels Would Fall by Melissa Etheridge. “I’ll come by and see you again/I’ll be such a very good friend/Have mercy on my soul/I will never let you know/where my mind has been.”
Losing My Religion, though it’s a little more obsess-y. But, c’mon. . .definitely.
Correct me if I’m wrong but Bernie Taupin is straight and, as far as any history I’ve collected on the two shows,* there has never been anything approaching a romantic frisson between the two.
This seems more apparent given Taupin writes the lyrics and, even if John were pining for Bernie, he would not have been able to verbally express it in their collaboration.

“Memory Leaves Town” by the Nields. Which contains a perfect summary of the whole unrequited love bit:
Why do I follow?
Considering the times
He has forgotten
He’s seen me at my best
And looked right through me
And (this shows my age), Diary by Bread.
I just downloaded Behind the Wall of Sleep by the Smithereens.
“The Poor Side of Town” by Johnny Rivers.
“He Doesn’t See Me” by Sarah Brightman on the “La Luna” album.
“You Don’t Know Me” by Kenny Loggins on the “Celebrate Me Home” album.
I second and third (“Long, Long Time” by Linda Ronstadt on the “Silk Purse” album.
Oh, waaaah! I’m glad I’m happily married… Those unrequited loves were so hard. One or two were so soul-crushing, I nearly died from a broken heart!
Gonna go cuddle my honey. Our love is requited!!!
