Upgrade or not? My DSL connection

Should I take the plunge and upgrade my DSL connection?

Right now, I’m paying $35 a month for what’s advertised as 384k down / 128k up. My ISP has offered 1500-6000k down / 384-608k up for $45.

Is it worth ten bucks a month? As a historical note, less than a year ago, I was paying $58 a month for the 384k service, so the 6000k is cheaper than last year’s rates.

Ask yourself this question, are you often disappointed with the speed of data transfer? If not, keep the money and buy yourself a bottle of inexpensive wine once a month to celebrate!

I would think that the major benefit would come from the uploading bandwidth increase. If your current connection is insufficient then it would be worth the extra money.

Um, sorry, but 99% of what the average internet user does is download stuff. 128kbit is plenty on the upload, but 384kbit down is right around what I’d consider to be minimally acceptible (theoretical max of 48 Kilobytes per second download).

So, if you find yourself downloading lots of pictures or binary files, and you’re sick of waiting, and you think that not waiting is worth an extra $10/month, go for it. Personally, I’d think it was worth it.

1500K - 6000K? As in 1.5 Mb guaranteed, with bursts up to 6 Mb?

Like the others have said, if you do any downloading then you should upgrade. Iif all you do is surf the web then your current connection should be fine.

I quite aware of that fact but there are folks that want the increased uploading speed.

28% increase in cost for 400% increase in speed?

Hell yeah!

Well, I’m not trying to be a dick about this, but if most people care more about download speed, then the “major benefit” is the 4X increase in guaranteed download speed.
