what’s the straight dope on this $24.95/month deal for DSL? has anyone tried it? are there any catches?
Your download and upload speed is limited, which may be a concern if you’re a gamer.
256Kbps is really slow for download. For example, my upload speed is 128Kbps, so I rarely get above 16KBps (note the capital and lower case Kbps/KBps), which is the type of speed you normally see while downloading something. With 256Kbps, you’d basically top out at 24KBps. Comparing this to 56K speeds, you’re only going about 3-5 times faster, which IMO sucks. Cable users usually get anywhere from 768Kbps to 1500Kbps.
The BellSouth FastAccess DSL Ultra - Faster service looks very promising, though. Choice between Static and Dynamic IP, up to 1.5Mbps download, and 256Kbps upload is a pretty good deal for $40 bucks a month. I think I pay $30 for the first 6 months and $45 for the last 6 months for Verizon DSL.
okay, since i’m not really into all this kbps stuff yet, how do bellsouth speeds compare to AOL dialup and AOL broadband?
