I am looking for CD stores in New York city.

Thanks.

The cheapest CD store in NYC that I know of is Academy Records on 18th Street. They specialize in classical, and sell anything else at “let’s just get rid of it prices.” Often you get new wrapped CDS for $9!

Tower Records has a huge annex down the street from their store on 4th & Broadway. Only problem is you really have to look for stuff.

Online you can try www.secondspin.com

ok, so I went walking around NYC today (from Grand Central towards 9th and back) looking at CD stores. I tried

Academy Records - They specialize on classical allright! They probably had around 200 cds in rock/pop. :frowning: But I ended up getting a Sibelius CD anyway. (I know I wont listen to it more than twice. )

Discorama (I think) - This was the best find. They didnt have Mezzanine though. And I thought their prices were a bit on the higher side ($10 per cd; i was expecting around $7-8). Bought Protection and Telegram. They also deal in adult DVDs. weird.

Etherea - Err… I went to 441 E 9th street and Avenue A. Found a music store that certainly doesnt sell stuff that I was looking for. It looks like they deal only in hardcore metal.

Second Hand Rose - arrrgh!!! They sell only second hand LPs. Is rose some slang for 45s?

“Second Hand Rose” is an old song. The name is probably used quite a lot for any type of used (something) store.

If that Sibelius CD has a decent version of “Finlandia” on it, send it my way when you’re done with it.

St. Marks Place

That’s where you want to go. It’s the stretch of 8th st between 3rd and 2nd Ave. At least 5 or 6 good used cd shops within a block of each other. (used to be a lot skeevier, and therefore more fun. But it cleaned up a bit when Rudy was in charge.)

The best is probably st. marks sounds on the south side of the street. Also good is venus records and joe’s on the north side. Occaisionally Kim’s video will have something worth getting. Also half a block down 3rd ave is norman’s.

Sounds averages $6-8, depending on how popular or new the cd is. Sometiems up to $10. Sometimes 88 cents.

I finally got around to roaming around NYC again and found St. Marks Place. In less than two hours, I had spent around $100 on 10 CDs. It was fun popping in and out of good used CD stores. I am sorry I dont remember any of the names of the stores; its all a blur to me…

I bought 2 Bjork, 2 Alpha, 3 Tricky and 2 Massive Attack and one Radiohead. I might do it again next weekend. I missed Norman’s out completely.

Widdershins: What version of Finlandia are you talking about? I have heard only one version which was too grandiose for my taste. I would love to hear a softer version of it.

Glad to be of service, Ramesh.

Norman’s isn’t worth a special trip. But if you’re in the area again, check it out.

There are a few more good shops down near Bleeker st. Near washington square park, but I don’t remember anything more specific.

Enjoy!

Joe’s CDs (St. Marks Pl)
Mondo Kim’s (St Marks Pl)
Norman’s Sound & Vision (cooper square)

the best place that I’ve found to get new cds (on the web) is www.cdplus.com. It’s based in Canada —> cheaper & no tax.

I took the cds you mentioned (plus all four Beck albums) and it came to $88.00USD including shipping. That’s about 8/cd, new. Can’t beat thay with a bat.

All that and you get to support the Canadian economy.

And fyi, if you’re getting into Massive Attack I reccomend Protection and No Protection

hijack longer than the response to the OP. I’m such a scamp.
