Heh … I emailed you once a lonnng time ago asking if you were THE Freddy the Pig. I’d seen the name for a while, but one day it struck me who you were (might be). Can’t believe it took me that long – my first cat was named Jinx!
Yes. I even wrote him once and he had some obfuscating answer that got me nowhere. I don’t know how I didn’t find it with Google, but I was probably misspelling it.
Everyone should read the Space Opera classic series known as the Lensmen series. It should be recognized as much for Space Opera as Conan is for Low Fantasy or Tolkien for High Fantasy.
The Lensman series is awesome but after reading 3 or 4 of them I realized they were all pretty much the same book. I would compare it to ER Burroughs’ work more than anything (which I also happen to love but harbor no delusions that it’s “good” in any academic sense.)
I doubt you meant it as an insult but Conan is considered Sword and Sorcery, not “low fantasy”. Tolkein himself read and even praised RE Howard for Conan.
Good clarification as the Lensmen series was clearly not a Masterpiece, just the books that were most inspiring to the Genre of Space Opera. I really enjoyed them, but I know how weak they are in parts. They are light reading and good for vacations and beaches. It doesn’t hurt that they helped inspire the likes of Robert Anson Heinlein.
The Low Fantasy was not meant as an insult. I divide Fantasy into 5 categories, the larger and older ones being Low and High. Low = Conan inspired action of as you said Sword and Sorcery, High = Epic inspired mainly by Tolkien. The others are Urban as in Charles DeLint and Steampunk that I know of few examples and Humorous of course, where Terry Pratchett seems to reign supreme but was hardly first.
Similarly, I thought Mangetout, was “Man Get Out!” ala Elaine Benes full frontal shove from Seinfeld. Then I remebered that mange was “eat” in italian and worked the rest out a long time ago.
I prefer Nori-new over Norine W. I new a “Noreen”, or maybe it was “Norine”, once and she was the biggest insufferable bitch I’ve ever met in my life. No offense to Norinew…
I don’t know if many people know it but my handle is the name of a song from one of my favorite bands called Sparklehorse… I threw in the “k” to make it relevant to the theme of the board.
you can listen to it here:
Wow. I pretty much typically assume I’m nearly invisible here.
Do you think I have issues?
In fact, though my username started out as first name/last initial (as per the email addy my first ISP gave me), now when I go to dopefests and such, I’ll say to people, “Hi, I’m nori-new”
It’s gotten so that, when it comes to the Dope, that’s how I think of myself.
As for confusing usernames, count me in on the bazillions who originally read mangetout as man get out, and I thought she (he?) was some angry, embittered ex, or something.
I never took French in high school, obviously.
I always read it as a ‘mangy tout’. I had no idea what a ‘tout’ was, but whatever it was, it was dirty, disheveled, and in need of some serious treatment. I learned the truth in one of those ‘explain your username’ threads–now I wonder if he’d eat a mangy tout?
For my part, I got Mangetout right off the bat. norinew, on the other hand, threw me until this thread.
Also, I don’t remember ever hearing of this:
By that, my name should be “Friday Meadors.”
RR
Thanks for that!
There’s a Hitler channel?? :dubious:
The History Channel, so nicknamed for their habit of playing all-Hitler, all the time there for a few years. Now, they seem to be the UFO/Ghostbuster Channel.
I’m sorry I missed the episode that mentioned me.
Count you blessings. I’d be Fluffy Colfax
Our daughter, however, would be Midnight Fairchild, which actually sounds kinda sexy. Too sexy for an 11-year-old.
I’d be Ginger Logan. Which does sound pretty adult-movie starrish, doesn’t it? Too bad I look nothing like a Ginger…
