Using Meetup groups for your birthday/wedding/ect?

I am part of several groups that are not “single interest” groups, meaning each meetup we do something different (hiking, museums, festivals, etc) and these groups have between 500-1,000 members.

I have noticed people are starting to schedule their/their kids b-days as “upcoming events”. ie: “Tomorrow’s my birthday, lets go to X bar to celebrate!”

These are not the people running the groups nor have they been with the group a long time, some have only joined two, three months prior.

Does it seem odd to ask hundreds of strangers (these groups don’t really have a “core group”, so different people come to each event) to come to what amounts to a birthday/weddding or other personal celebration?

It can be strange. If it was a house party or whatever I’d consider it odd to see it on meetup. A birthday being celebrated in a bar is a different; it’s essentially saying “This is a normal meetup in a bar, but btw it’s my birthday so get me a drink :)”

Also note that the organizer can have a great deal of control over an event. They can set it so you don’t get on the guest list without their manual confirmation. And share the event’s location only to those people who are on the guest list. So you can use it as a way to organize more private events.
