We frequently vacation apart. We don’t like the same things. We each make sure the other is welcome and invited, but don’t pressure each other to waste vacation time with something they don’t enjoy.
In the past few years, she (and sometimes LittleMizpullin) have been to France/Belgium/Spain/RelativesHouse Although invited, I assured them I would pay **not **to go to any of these. In the same time I’ve visited caves, missile silos, ghost towns, an aircraft carrier, 2 submarines, a variety of small islands and spent many days roaming the woods and hunting and fishing. All of which she would pay to avoid doing.
We each have 4 vacation weeks a year to spend, and take at least 1 week together, usually RV-ing to somewhere interesting. But we don’t force our likes/hobbies on each other for the rest of the vacation time.
Interesting how common motorcycle trips are. Typically twice a year I hit the road on my motorcycle, getting together with a bunch of friends. Most of the times it’s just a five-day thing, but every four years or so it’s a longer trip, like a couple of weeks.
Wife and I take plenty of trips together too, just not on the bike.
Once in a while we’ll have separate ‘vacations’ but it’s usually family stuff. Right now my Wife is away for a long weekend - Friday to Tuesday.
We have to board our dogs whenever we go anywhere so it often makes sense for one of us to stay home.
I’ll be taking my Mom to visit her brother in October. It’s not unusual for me to spend a weekend at my Mom’s house helping her out. Or spend the night at my cousins or a good friends house.
When I was taking banjo lessons, I would spend the night at a friends house, and go directly to work the next morning. Saved me about 75 miles of driving.
So we don’t do big vacations, but an overnight or long weekend isn’t uncommon. I think it’s a good thing. It works for us.
