Other than the fact that “we can,” is there any satisfactory justification for the killing of animals for food?
–(Especially considering that we can get all the necessary nutrients from non-animal sources)–
I think this thread is destined for some other place than GQ. Just my hunch.
Because I like the taste of animal flesh a lot more than that of vegetable matter.
And at least when humans kill animals for food we don’t rip the animal open and begin devouring its flesh while it’s still alive and kicking. In that respect, we a lot more humane (if you’ll pardon the pun) than the rest of the animal kingdom.
O.k., so:
- We can.
- It tastes good.
Any other justifications?
(It would seem that there’d have to be something more in order to justify the unnecessary pain and suffering of sentient beings).
It’s part of the food chain. Face it-animals eat other animals.
Also, so far, if we keep domestic animals as pets (say, cats?), then some of them need to be fed meat. For cats, it’s manditory, despite what PETA says.
Hoooo-boy
Here we go again.
A tip for the newbie/vegan:
Do a search, you’ll find this horse rimshot has been beaten before…

jelasafork,
Welcome to the SDMB. This forum is for questions with factual answers. Your question:
Does not have a factual answer unless you specify satisfactory to whom. To me? Sure. To you? Prolly not.
I’m going to close this and suggest that you open up a new thread in Great Debates (if you wish to debate eating animals) or IMHO (if you want to take a poll or get people’s opinions).
