Gonna be in the area attending a scientific conference at The Salk Institute and am sure to have an evening or two free. So if you guys and gals have been looking for an excuse for a Dopefest, here I am!
Failing that of course some advice on where to spend my time money would be appreciated. Thanks all.
Are you going to be staying near the Salk Institute (i.e. La Jolla)?
I work a few blocks away from the Salk, so I know that immediate area pretty well.
If you’re into nature, be sure to walk over to Torrey Pines state park. There are some hiking trails that overlook the ocean, and are nice to get out at. If you golf - Torrey Pines golf course, naturally.
If you want to be titillated, you can drop down from the Torrey Pines Gliderport down to Black’s Beach. It’s a clothing optional place. But any time I’ve passed by, I’ve seen one tubby guy that you really wouldn’t want to see nekkid anyway. But you could say you’ve been there, anyway!
Downtown La Jolla has some froofy restaurants and shops, but it’s also got a cove that’s nice to walk around.
For nightlife, I’d head south into Pacific Beach, where there are a few streets lined with various nightspots (Garnet Ave in particular).
I’ll be staying at the University of California at San Diego and going to the conference at the Salk, so advice for either area is welcome. Thanks for the tips!
UCSD and the Salk are pretty much right next to each other, so you’ve got a good set up. You will be within walking distance of Torrey Pines [golf course & park] and Black’s Beach. La Jolla is probably 3-4 miles away so an easy trip.
Unfortunately you’re staying right in the “Golden Triangle”, which is a euphemism for all the local biotechs. Not a lot of nightlife, just a bunch of businesses. If you are looking for a bite to eat, cross over Interstate 5 on Genesee and you’ll encounter UTC (shopping mall with your average food court), PF Changs (chinese), Donovan’s (highly reputed steak house) and a few other restaurants. But not much “entertainment” - i.e. no movie theaters, even.
You could always head north to Del Mar, which is probably 5-10 miles up the road, and there are movie theaters, some swanky restaurants, and more nice beaches to check out.
Of course you’ll have to do all of this with your panda ear headband on.
Verrain, I’m up for dinner one of those nights. Just let me know when. Perhaps we can get Skydiver down from Oceanside. I think Esprix is out of town but we might be able to scare up a few other dopers.
I could probably make it for dinner on either the 17th, or 18th, as I’ll only have the little’n, and could probably convince grandma to do some babysitting duty(duty? HA! She lives for that kid). I will have my older two again, starting the 19th, and they’re already in school, so if it’s not on the weekend, then it’s a no go for me.
Anyone else? Oh, and if we do do this, where should we go?
I will be in San Diego from August 18-24, staying at the Doubletree Hotel, and I’d be up for getting together as I’ve never met any Dopers. I actually started a separate thread, not realizing this one was here. Thanks to VDarlin for pointing me in the right direction.
I just discovered that the hotel I’m staying at is not downtown, but a bit north of that. It’s the Doubletree-Mission Valley, located near the junction of Hwy. 163 and Friars Rd. That does put me slightly closer to the Salk Institute, though, and not too far from La Jolla.
Yeah it would have been. Ah well. Just got my schedule today. Is the weekend better for people or are weekdays possible for the locals? I’m up for anything, preferrably dinner and drinks somewhere nearby Salk between my sessions.
I’ll get to San Diego in the afternoon on Sunday, Aug 18, and will be free that evening once I check in to the Doubletree. I am also free from 8:30 PM onward on Monday the 19th, busy Tuesday and Wednesday night, but free after 5 PM Thursday and Friday the 22nd and 23rd.
Well I am there from Sat the 17 to Wed 21, mainly available Sun to Tues either between 5:30 to 7, the time they give us for dinner or after 10pm unless of course I blow off some the conference to meet with Dopers which is a good possiblity if we can settle on a date and time and place.
I checked my schedule and the Tuesday and Wednesday evening activities are things I could get out of. Actually, so’s the Monday evening thing. These are basically “mixer” and “dinner” type activities.
I’m also free from noon on Wednesday till about 6:00 pm or so, after which we have a Padres vs. Braves game which isn’t mandatory, but I’ll most likely attend.
My co-worker, who has previously stayed at the Doubletree Mission Valley, tells me it is located within walking distance to the light rail (San Diego Trolley, Blue Line). I found this link that was helpful, apparently I can get to a few neat places via the trolley:
Well? Anyone? After tomorrow(today, er, sunday) I’m pretty much out, as I’ll have all of my kiddos, but I could try…maybe. Anyway, Goonhead e-mailed me with the number where he’s staying, and asked me to pass any info on to him, so, if somebody wants to do something, post it here, and I’ll get it to him.
