Very annoying PC Screen Resolution Problem

Firstly if no one can help with this can someone suggest a more appropriate forum?

I recently installed Lord of the Rings Online on my PC and played about a bit with the resolution inside the game to set it to 1280x1024. The native resolution of my flat panel monitor. After closing the game down I found that the display area of my screen was shifted to the right so half of it was black.

Strange I thought … even stranger changing the resolution to something else or the monitor screen refresh rate to something other than 60Hz ( the default for my screen ) fixed the problem.

Changing back to 1280x1024x60Hz brought the problem back. My screen was moved to the right so half the monitor appeared black. As these are the default settings for my screen this is tooth gratingly annoying. Lower resoltions on a flat panel don’t look good and many programs won’t allow you to change the refresh rate.

I’ve been onto NVidia support and Code Masters support ( the people who made the program that caused the problem ) and neither has been remotely helpfull. I’ve completely de-installed the graphics drivers and replaced them with a variety of differant versions. This made no difference at all …

My card is an NVidia 7600GT … has anyone come across a problem like this before or have any idea at all what I can do to solve it?

If there is a tech support number for CodeMasters it might be worth giving them a call. Many games like to shift display properties while in game, for some reason its not snapping back out, they may have some insight on your problem perhaps suggesting a different or older video driver or correct settings to avoid the problem.

Are you running Vista? Turning off the Aero interface may help.

I would post this problem in LOTR online forums, perhaps someone else has had that problem. I skimmed through the post titles but didn’t find a solution: http://forums.lotro.com/forumdisplay.php?f=15

I’ve had similar problems with older games. You exit and the desktop is messed up. I sometimes have luck right clicking the desktop and choosing refresh. Some games have caused me to have to exit and restart to get the screen back to normal. I rarely use them either.

Sadly I’ve tried the above … I don’t have a clue how to proceed now. Its Windows XP home edition by the way.

What happens if you turn your monitor off then on again? Does it straighten up?

Try updated drivers for your monitor.

Do you play other games where this does not happen? If so I still say post a message to the forums.

I’d recommend Tech Support Guy forums . The people over there are marvellous at finding solutions to the most abstruse of computer problems.
