A lot of games have mods that people have made for them. Have you played any mods that you think improve on the original in nearly every way? The original Day Z would be an example. Tell me what you think!
I don’t know about better, but the TerraFirmaCraft mod for Minecraft makes it far more of a survival challenge and it was definitely a refreshing change of pace when I made a TFC world after years of vanilla.
You know, I can’t tell if you’re just messing with me here. I’m one of the mod developers for terrafirmacraft.
It’s possible that your username sparked something on an unconscious level but I’m being genuine. TFC is a really great new way to experience minecraft even if I’m even worse at it than regular MC. I won’t lie. I usually start off on peaceful until I can get a base and some food sources cooking.
As far as “major conversion” style mods (rather than just prettier graphics or small QOL changes), I still remember the Aliens “Total Conversion” mod For DOOM II (Youtube) complete with it’s creatureless first level.
Defense of the Ancients has proven much more popular than the Warcraft III on which it was built, and has now spawned a stand-alone sequel.
And I’ve never played it, but I’ve heard rave reviews for Gary’s Mod, which was (I think) for Half-Life 2, and which turned the game into a giant sandbox environment.
There was a total conversion for Half Life that turned it into a zombie story. Most of it was rather well done in a moody sort of way. Only the boss fight at the end sucked, but that was true of Half Life itself.
Frontline Force, a multiplayer conversion for Half Life 1, is still my favorite online shooter I’ve ever played. Interesting mechanics that rewarded team based play, and the main game mode resulted in some incredibly tense “last stand” moments defending capture points.
Oh Jesus, yes. I was too frightened to play much of that. Doom II was more of a shoot-em-up free-for-all game, but that mod left me near traumatized.
That’s the first thing that came to my mind when I saw this topic as well - that mod was awesome and I loved the first level.
The Threewave CTF and Teamfortress mods for Quake.
Not that Quake wasn’t revolutionary in it’s own right, but these mods had a huge influence in gaming thereafter.
Normally I don’t care for mods at all, but I thought TerraFirmaCraft could have easily been marketed as a proper sequel to MineCraft. Good job.
