Video post test thread

Testing if I can simply post the URL of a previously posted Youtube video with no problems.

Yep, it worked. I picked a video already posted in a different thread (in this post) here and simply cut/pasted it into the post without triggering the error message. (See this thread for the reason.)

So on my phone, pasting in Youtube URLs does not need any tricks, even if the video has been posted before.

Curious. Definitely not true for me:

Another test:

I think I might know what’s happening. Can you try the same post once more?

Sure.

(And now it gave the error.)

Ok, thanks. I think what’s happening is this: the link you picked started with a bare www.youtube.com. For whatever reason, one of the links (either yours or the original) actually converted that to http://www.youtube.com behind the scenes. That changed the URL text and let the post through.

But on your second post, the URL had then already been stored, giving the error. I suspect it was http that was added because in a test post, I manually added an http:// and it gave the error, even though that version had not been posted explicitly. When I manually added https://, it succeeded. Now, all three versions have been stored and can’t be used again, so some other tweak is required.

goodbye cruel video

Test

I used the thread to test posting a video, so not the repost method. Seems to work for this.

I never have any luck with Youtube videos so let’s try this &1 thing.

https://www. youtube.com/watch?v=t8tdmaEhMHE&1 (link deliberately broken on edit)

Nope, still can’t make it work. What am I doing wrong?

Trying again

Okay that’s better. Who needs to edit a post anyway?

Test.

It looks like you got it to work, but for others who don’t read the linked thread: the message preview counts as a view, so if you are composing your message on the desktop with the default preview window on the right, it will fail when you save it. You need to collapse the preview window before you add the URL. This isn’t a problem on mobile because the preview isn’t visible by default.

nm

It just occurred to me another reason I generally have no problem posting links. Doing it from my phone, the links tend to start with m.youtube.com, so that’s another URL variant.
