I won’t even post until the second post of the thread.
No way.
Ragnar. Dead? I can’t believe it. He’s the core of the show.
I can not believe they killed him. I had always pictured him dying in the final episode of the show.
I’m so disappointed. Is there a chance he somehow survives all that? No way, right?
I’ll keep watching, but I am super disappointed.
I am nowhere near caught up (think I watched all of S1+S2, but might need a refresher). But I don’t mind spoilers because the show is (however loosely) based upon a real saga that (maybe) portrays real events.
Ragnar Loðbrók is killed. His sons avenge his death. Great Heathen Army = band name.
I have no idea if that’s what happened this season.
Any chance dumpsters were invented during the Viking Age?
That’s how the “historical” Ragnar died - thrown in a pit of vipers by King Aielle. According to an interview with the show writer, he originally planned for Ragnar to die at the end of season 1 - it was originally envisioned to be a saga covering a few hundred years. But yes, it will be moving on to concentrate on Ivar and Bjorn. And Aielle and Ecbert are screwed six ways from Sunday.
Haven’t caught up yet, new episodes sitting on my DVR… this was always a summer show, so I’ll probably need to wait until I’ve got more time after football season is over to watch it.
Yeah, I always knew Ragnar was going to die eventually, but given how the show played out with him as the main character (never knew he was originally slated to die in season 1!) I kinda figured his death would come near the end of the show with only a few episodes, or maybe one season, to cover the Great Heathen Army. Fimmel’s Ragnar has become such a large part of the reason the show works, I’m not sure I can see it lasting much longer without him (and maybe this is a reason they’re placing the show now instead of summer?)
I think Vikings is ending after this season. I could be wrong.
I have been watching Real Vikings, and Rollo actually came a few hundred years after Ragnar, but for dramatic license they decided to make them brothers. Rollo was the ancestor of William the Conqueror.
They jumped ahead what, ten years? No explanation as to what Ragnar was doing all that time. He came back a broken man and his death will be the catalyst for vengeance for his sons.
I don’t really care for Ivar, and from what I can find on Wikipedia he may not have have been paralyzed, but had Ehlers-Danos syndrome.
Quite frankly, season 1 and 2 Ragnar is so much sexier than season 3 and 4 Ragnar.
The interview I referenced above said they’re currently filming season 5, and are almost done, so at least one more season to go.
I could live with his death if that were true, but…
…this is correct.
So I started binge watching via Amazon Prime a week or so ago and just got caught up to the broadcast (less tonight’s episode). Wow, this show is amazing. I did not know this was based upon a historical/legend so Ragnar’s fate in the last episode was completely unexpected on my part.
From this thread and doing some quick wiki reading I see where they can keep the story going but I’m honestly not sure how compelling the remaining characters will be for me. Lagatha and Bjorn are about the only other two characters I actually really liked. I also liked Rollo but I’m assuming his role will be fairly minor going forward. The other sons of Ragnar are just not interesting to me at all.
And yes, I probably butchered some of the names like a Viking butchers Christians.
A bit disappointed with the last episode “Crossings”.
On the one hand, the appearance of Oden as the messenger of Ragnar’s death was a bit much for me, but I guess the writer’s had to figure out some way to inform the sons.
Also, Bjorn’s raid on the Saracens in Algeciras was anticlimactic.
The Saracens were known warriors in their own right and they would probably have fought back to some degree, or at least flee as the raid was a surprise. Seriously, these were the people who concurred Spain, Sicily, the Balkans, not to mention North Africa and Eastwards all the way to the borders of India. I seriously doubt the Saracens would have gone into a Mosque to pray in some sort of trans, completely ignoring the Vikings. And what was up with Floki’s reaction to them?
I love the series, but this episode was not a favorite.
Hope it get’s better.
Looking forward to vengeance of Ragnar.
The series really suffered with the death of Aethelstan (though he had to move on to be the King of France). The conflict and exploration of the two cultures was the best part of it and with Ragnar dead now, there is nothing but war between the sons of Ragnar and Ecbert/Aielle left.
Ivar is a whiny bitch and I wish Lagatha would kill him but that’s doubtful. I don’t find his character particularly clever like he’s supposed to be. I also think Lagatha’s girl on the side is going to betray her somehow.
I agree, while I can see how the rest of this season will go, it will be tough to transition this to be a Bjorn & Ivar based show next season - I assume it will be about conflict between them and Harald.
But the scene where Bjorn burst in as Lagertha was preparing to fight Ivar & Ubbe was excellent. And the followup too, when Hvitserk told them they probably wouldn’t be able to kill Bjorn even if they wanted to.
Do they make it into the playoffs?
Rollo is the real-life sire of a Norman dynasty that soon leads to the birth of his descendant, William the Conqueror. I doubt they’ll dispense with Rollo so quickly.
I saw that too, it was fascinating. I’m pretty sure they said it was 60 years between them. The entire Viking age of invasion was around 300 years.
