My father did.
What are the charges?
It makes a difference because Obama chose to attend a church were this bullshit is preached, believed, supported, and cheered. Of all the churches, he chose this one and that says something.
Mods, please feel free to remove this post.
There are separate questions here.
Do Obama’s pastor’s past comments reflect on Obama in any meaningful way and was Obama’s rejection of those beliefs adequate?
How do Obama’s reaction to his pastor’s comments and Clinton’s reactions to Ferraro’s compare?
How will this play out in various voting demographics?
I’m completely comfortable with my assessment that Obama does not endorse any of those beliefs and his reaction was more appropriate. I remain suspicious that Ferraro’s comments were with full approval of Team Clinton. They help Hillary with key voting groups in PA. Wright’s old comments resurfacing right after the Ferraro debacle does not correspondingly help Obama in any way. I do wonder just how they happened to resurface now? Hmmmm.
But on to question three. This combination will play well for Team Clinton in PA. It sends the message that he’s only winning because he is Black and now he is potentially scary Black - associating with “God Damn America” Black - resonating with his wife’s lack of pride in America Black.
The PA primary is a ways away. He has plenty of time to refocus a message. But his game is currently off. She’s jabbing and he’s responding, blocking her jabs but not in control. He’s got play a more aggressive game - not negative, but aggressive. He said it himself : “She’s the champ, she’s part of the Democratic network in Washington, and if you’re the title holder then you don’t lose it on points. You’ve got to be knocked out.”
I am confident that the only people who are going to buy into it are the ones who believe the Madrassa story or the Vince Foster conspiracy theory – you know – morons.
What does it say? Be specific. What do you believe it “says” about Barack Obama’s personal beliefs? If you don’t think he believes any of it than what possible difference can it make to his ability to be President?
Do you believe that Barack Obama is secretly an America hating Black Nationalist who wants to kill whiyety? If not, then what DO you think he is? Give me a specific answer about how you think it would affect his policy positions as POTUS.
Even if that’s true, there are a helluva lot of 'em on the voter rolls.
Link? I went to the church site and didn’t see them
I just don’t agree. I have friends and who I strongly disagree with and I still love them and value their input in other areas. You seem to be saying anyone running for president doesn’t have that luxury. I say that’s totally unrealistic. As Obama said, Wright was his Pastor not his political adviser.
For one thing it’s wrong to assume that Obama will heavily favor black issues and ignore or punish white people. Lot’s of the issues involved in the social message of civil rights and fighting oppression involve people of all colors. Poverty, health care, education, apply equally to all races.
More’s the joke that we haven’t already had some ethnic centric presidents {if I understand your meaning} Why do you suppose it’s taken over 200 years before we had a viable woman or black candidates? Do you think that rich white presidents treated all races and economic groups equally?
Symantec rubbish. You’re a rabid supporter of the Democratic party.
That would be your opinion. I think Wright is far worse than Duke because he is suppose to be a leader in spiritual matters.
The fact is the Democratic party has an ex Klan leader who thinks it’s ok to use “White Nigger” in a sentence and the Republican party doesn’t. There’s nothing hypothetical about it. I gave a real world example. You can’t answer it because you know you would object to someone using Duke as part of their campaign.
It’s Saturday and I’ve things to do. Feel free to continue your 24 years of no political affiliation in my absence.
My actual hope is that Obama will find a way to get past this. Right now I don’t see it.
I’ve been trying to talk myself into voting for Clinton in the general, if it comes to that. She’s evil, but the lesser of two evils. At least she’s not obviously unstable and not very likely to expire in office.
I’m really hoping I have Obama to vote for in the fall.
I was also hoping he’d have a good shot at winning, but I think that’s gone now.
No charges. My father was career State Department. He started at State under Reagan and worked under every administration since then. He had somewhat of an inside view of things at State and he thought (and his opinion was almost universally shared within the Department) that Bush was an unmitigated disaster. My dad’s last tour was in Brazil and he said before the '04 election that If Bush was reelected, he would stay in Brazil after hs retirement and not return to the US. He wasn’t kidding. He lives in Rio now. He visits the US once or twice a year but he refuses to live here while Bush is still in office.
I’ve been looking for the vile…
Nothing at all vile in the OP’s link: Barack Obama's pastor's words echo through campaign
OK, next link:
Even if some of the conspiracy theories he’s swallowed are true, he’s almost certainly wrong on some facts. But the denunciations of America, even, “God damn America,” are in line with the average Biblical minor prophet. Hardly hate speech.
OK, how about this:
Sounds more like denouncing racism than like racism. Acknowledging that rich white people run the country is not bigotry.
OK, if this is reliable, well, yeah, that’s bad. But you’re talking about two degrees of separation here.
So I ask you all, what do you think Barry Obama would do in office if he actually does buy all this stuff? I mean, really! We’ve had Presidents who considered blacks to be inferior, haven’t we? Lincoln considered blacks to be inferior, & we’ve made an idol of him. Is the republic in danger from having a President whose associates kinda, sorta, maybe, think whites are inferior? Or even if Barack himself considers whites (including his own ancestors) to be inferior, what’s he going to do?
It’s spelled “semantic,” and you’re wrong. I’ve been very disparaging of the Democratic Party. I think they’re gutless and ineffectual and way too conservative. I’ve had no choice but to vote for them because the alternative has been Monkey Hitler, but “rabid support?” Not hardly.
I think being a racist is worse than being a spiritual advisor. YMMV.
Byrd is like a thousand years old and is pretty much a doddering old fart that everyone ignores, just like strom Thurmonds was. I would actualkly welcome the Republicans bringing David Duke into the fold and putting him right out front and center. That would be a huge win for the NotBush party.
Actually David Duke IS a Republican, or at least he used to be. He once ran as the Republican candidate for Governor of Louisiana.
It says that he choses to be a member of a group where ignorant and delusional bullshit is preached, believed, supported, and cheered, and that he chooses to support this group. It shows that he either does not care that he is supporting bullshit or something more sinister.
I know nothing about Hillary Clinton’s church. But, if I found out Clinton chose to go to a church where the minister went on rants, where he was cheered by the congregation, saying that the government killed JFK and that the government was covering up that vaccines cause autism, it would say the same thing about her.
There are already enough people out there caught up in believing these stupid urban legends and we do not need important people joining up and supporting groups that spread these lies. There are a lot of churches to choice from and the one Obama chose has some major issues.
The answer is still no. That would be taking things way too far.
I do not know what he (or really anyone else) is; however, this does not reflect well on him.
Who knows?
I would like you to answer my questions about the congregation and the church:
If this was not an ideology of the church, I find it hard to believe that the congregation would have reacted the way it did to Wright’s statements. Beliefs that the government invented HIV or knew about Pearl Harbor are only held by extremely ignorant people and are only cheered by people deluded by ideology. Do you find it at all hard to believe that the congregation as a whole would cheer Wright’s statements on HIV and Pearl Harbor if there nothing about these beliefs that related to the ideology of the church? It is a hell of coincidence that such ignorant and deluded people ended up together if the church had nothing to do with beliefs of this nature.
Do you think it is just a coincidence that there were so people in the congregation willing cheer on ignorant statements about the government inventing HIV or to you think there is something about this church that is attracting these people?
I’ve considered myself an Obama supporter for some months now. But I’ve read this thread carefully, and given things a lot of thought. I think this is something people should really consider. And I can now say that I will not be voting for Rev. Wright for president.
whew That feels good to get off my chest.
Actually, since I’m here, I’ve been meaning to ask Phlosphr something - any idea where I can get an Obama sign to put in my yard? Is that something I can order from a website somewhere or something?
Hey now, let’s leave Norton AntiVirus out of this!
You can say that about every religious congregation on earth. It’s no worse than McCain attending Creationist events. There aren’t any candidates running who don’t belong to delusional religious groups, so I’m voting for the guy who’s going to support policies I agree with. I don’t give a rat’s ass what anybody’s pastor says.
Oh roll your eyes at your own damn post. Your conclusion speaks only for you. No one else in this thread or even that video is at all trying to equate Barack to Jesus, beyond the fact that all Christians, of all economic levels, and of all colors are taught to follow in the path and teachings of Jesus.
Strictly speaking for only myself, as a mid-twenties white male, from the midwest, now the north west; I find nothing to disagree with in that video. I need just take a walk down the street, or have a conversation with someone face to face in our very neighborhood to get an idea, an understanding, and be able to begin empathising where those fellow citizens, sitting and standing in those pews, on that tape are coming from.
I am emensly thankful for the opportunities and advantages I have had access to in my life so that I may never fully understand the hardships and oppression faced, by those who might choose to listen to Jeremiah Write, but I can at least attempt to step outside of myself and my life enough to try.
People claim that the some of the views expressed by Wright are some how “un-American”? No, I’m sorry, but that is America, and it is time for these Americans to be heard.
Nonsense. I’ve seen no evidence that any Obama supporters have fallen out over this, but more than one previous non-supporter who have actually fallen in because of it. The Flying Dutchman is one (who I highly commend, because it takes a big person to admit they may have held wrong beliefs about a person and publicly acknowledge that), and a Pennsylvania man who, as reported on the Obama blogs, when engaged in “a dialogue about yesterday’s news, he explained that he felt a renewed sense of responsibility to vote for Barack based on the idea that we have to assist in stopping racial divide. He was torn between HC and Barack until this happened and he realized that we better elect the guy who will help heal all of these wounds, new and old.”
So stop with the hand-wringing, please.
