I am about 4 episodes into the second season and dare I say it, I kind of love this show.
It’s a Viking show and as painful as it is to say this, I think its quality is more consistently high than Vikings, a show I really liked.
I was initially unsure with the opening few episodes, but once the main story got going, I was on board. I am only a few episodes into the second season, but so far I like it quite a bit more.
It is anime, based on a Japanese comic book, but is purely a Viking drama show. It does not feel Japaneses the way many anime shows do.
Does anyone else watch this? Episodes are 25 minutes long and there are only 48 total episodes right now.
IGN gave season 2 a 10/10 if that matters to anyone.
I watched the first few episodes, and liked them in general but lost interest and at this point would likely have to start again (though could fast forward through parts I remember)
My son loves this show and got me watching. I made it up to ep.14 in season 1 and lost interest. It didn’t seem to be advancing plot wise with the main characters.
My son keeps trying to get me to continue with it but I haven’t picked it up again.
It wraps up storylines at that point. His whole “I gotta get this guy who killed my dad” thing wraps up 100% Won’t say how, but I was glad it was over.
Watched both seasons on Crunchyroll and loved it. Have read the manga for years, and have been eagerly awaiting the next volume for the same. It’s currently on the 4th story arc I think: yes, the series has a lot of character development.
While it has historical characters (eg Thorfinn, Gudrid, Lief Erikson - don’t click the links if you don’t want spoilers) it has a heavy overlay of modern sensibility. Not a lot is known about these individuals, so I think it’s fair game to just make things up about their backstory. Underlying moral evolution of the characters and by extension their society is terrific. The utter disgust with the age’s barbarity seemed very Japanese to me.
Askaladd was a great character, named after a Norwegian fairy tale character, also influenced by Olaf the Peacock, an Icelandic merchant who lived from 938 to 1006.
I watched it with subtitles. How was the English dub?
The manga industry is tough. Imagine starting this project not knowing for the first few years whether it would get cancelled.
I tried it. First of all, FYI, Vikings is really unrealistic, at least in costuming. Viking wore bright primary colors, and not black leather.
I couldnt take the anime conventions, such as yelling for emphasis, the faces, etc. Mind you, the animation- when not doing Anime characters, was pretty damn good.
Pretty sure the Vikings were treated unrealistically in more ways than costuming. It’s a story about violence, pacifism and human perceptions of the same more than anything else: get your history elsewhere.
I agree that this Japanese anime contains shonen anime conventions. Also that both seasons were animated by top Japanese studios (Wit and Mappa) and the quality shows.
too many “my life is so miserable” reflection episodes
A few too many episodes for not enough story to make each one necessary
Still, good show.
I won’t go read the comic to find out what happens next, but I wouldn’t mind reading a summary. I hope they make a season 3 and it doesn’t take 4 years to come out.
Arc 3 (which I read years ago, ~2014-~2019) Thorfinn attempts to raise funds to conduct an expedition to Vinland. Negotiates with Halfdan. Is presented with various challenges that in most works of fiction would involve embracing violence. Encounters one of his old victims.
Arc 4: (Still in the works, so there won’t be an anime for years): Time skip. Lands in Vinland with party. Encounters natives. More (somewhat humorous) struggles with pacifism.
