Voicemail Message to CD

How can I save personal voicemail messages (one on my landline office phone and 2 on my cellphone) to an electronic file that I can then burn to CD?

I could’ve sworn I saw this discussed on the SDMB but I’ll be darned if i can find the thread.

There is an [url=http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=338140active thread on the ethics of this over in IMHO.

Gahh…

There is an active thread on the ethics of this over in IMHO.

Yeah, I saw that thread, but I’m not looking to publish the CD. I’ve been meaning to ask about this for a few weeks. I’ve done some searching but can’t quite figure out what to do.

I have several harassing messages that were left on my voicemail that I’d like present in a court case, but I don’t know how to do it. And I don’t have a ton of money to spend.

I bought this thingy to record phone calls to tape when I was a journalism student (phone interviews). Worked well and it’s only $16.

You could plug this thing in, call your voicemail and record it to tape and use the tape at the hearing. You could also figure out how to record to your computer - not to tape.

If your voicemail is cell phone voicemail, most cell phone voicemails are available through any phone - just dial your cell #, and hit the appropriate buttons to log in and retrieve messages.

Thanks - I didn’t know stuff like that existed. It’ll work just as well & also get the time and date stamp of the calls.

It looks like you plug the unit into the phone and into the tape recorder. Does it only work with mini tape recorders?

It should work with any device that has a 1/8 inch microphone jack. I believe you could also use an adaptor.

Nope - the one I have (the Radio Shack model) has a standard-sized headphone jack plug that would fit in any walkman.

Your computer probably has the same sized jack in the back for a microphone.

Alot of stereos have a larger-sized plug, in which case you need something like this to go from the phone thing to a stereo.

I think they suggest a mini-recorder because a standard walkman isn’t going to have recording capabilities and having something hand-held is just easier in this application.

And yes you are right - you unplug the handset and plug it in to this device, then plug this device in to where the handset used to be. Then the other end of this device goes in to your recording apparatus.

BTW if you need help recording from a standard microphone jack to a standard sort of computer, try searching the board for how to do it. There have been many threads. I’d tell you but I’ve never done it using tools the Average Joe would have
