Dinner tonight was bacon cheeseburger, fries, and corn with Old Bay and an Old Fashioned. Which was somewhat delayed because a certain tuxedo-ed overlord wanted extended cuddles.

Evening all. Shopping done and for my New Year’s change, I got a #8 Sub (Club with Turkey, Ham, and Bacon) instead of my usual #3 (Ham and Provolone). Was pretty good and may order it again, not all that many more calories. Then some gym time and came home and did some soccer stuff on-line, but have done nothing else useful since then. Still 50F outside so not a bad day at all.
One oddity; about 7pm there was a very audible thump outside my house and it was loud enough for me to get my flashlight and go out back to see if part of the fence had fallen down or something else had happened. Couldn’t see anything amiss but I noticed my next-door neighbor was out with his flashlight and looking around (we have a 6-ft fence between us so could only see his light) so it appears he heard it to. No alarms or cops seen so it will go down as one of those mysteries that probably will never have a satisfactory answer.
And over 30 messages to scroll and it’s closing in on 10pm, so need to get to work…
Cookie, sweet dreams and less ice than expected.
Knots, can’t recall ever hearing about chalking the doors and know I never did anything like it, but interesting to hear the discussion here about it.
Baguettes are nortorious cannibals…
FCM, glad the phone worked out. I still have the same one I bought about 3 years ago, it is still working well so I see no reason to update. I have Traveller’s Home Insurance and they’ve been pretty responsive when I’ve contacted them with my prior plumbing issues.
Nut, it is always the most obviously easy things that turn out to be hard. Hope you do get it sorted out tomorrow.
red, hope the debit card issue got resolved. I finally got a debit card a year or so ago and now I use it a lot.
rocky, don’t give up hope for that kindle quite yet. Ya never know…
Piper, Oh No! Glad CAA is on the ball (albeit once they found you). Let us know that your safely home.
HAPPY B-DAY RED!!!
Now making a late supper / pan-fried gnocchi with spinach, zucchini and spinach, with a cream sauce.
So CAA sprung you. Or you live atop the snowy median now?
So how was the rescue? Or as @susan wonders, do you have a stove in your car?
But yikes!!
Day 3 of helping SIL ski. She’s getting better. It’s too bad she doesn’t have another few days because she’s just getting the hang of it.
The ski resort has two mountains and the main building is on the West side. They have green (easy) runs but the easiest run is on the east side.
I was taking SIL down the green run on the West side today, as she’s getting better, and ran into yet another absolute beginner who had gotten himself into trouble. His friends has taught him just a bit then went off to intermediate runs. So I helped him down the hill. I wasn’t going very fast because of SIL so it wasn’t too bad.
In Canada, one must be prepared for any eventuality in winter driving.
But I’m home. CAA is one of the best investments going.
Guy arrived, walked around a bit, said “I think pulling you back is better than forwards.”
And 10 minutes later I was on. my way.
One of the several people who stopped to help was a young south Asian guy, who asked, “How did this happens, Sir?”
Then he looked across the intersection to the perfectly cleared lane leading to the lane full of snow-ploughed packed snow and said: “Oh. They fucked up.”
Summed up the evening perfectly.
Early teens. I won’t be teaching them how to shovel a walkway until I can re-teach them that dirty clothes go into the laundry hamper and are not simply strewn about one’s room.
If they see this, I suspect the lesson on proper handling of laundry will take much longer so they can evade the snow shoveling. ![]()
Bring your skis to Hawaii. Big Island’s summits will see heavy snow-ice, with winds of 40-60 mph.*
Rest of us here are getting rain, wind, flooding conditions looks like through next week too. Good, since we’ve been in a drought.
*authorities don’t want you up there.
Up, caffeinated, and sheveled. Off to heave. It’s a balmy 38 degrees Ferret Height(2.2 Centipedes) outside.
Seems to be the theme for 2026.
But glad you got rescued.
Happy birthday, red!

Morning, mumpers! It’s currently -3c/27f with a predicted high of 2c/26f and mostly cloudy. Weather app says “I bet you wish you fucking lived in San Diego. Well, that place fucking sucks too.” I visited San Diego once, it wasn’t that bad but nothing on earth would persuade me to set foot in the US now ![]()
I hope you can get it sorted out without getting snowed in! We had more snow overnight here, which we weren’t supposed to get. Fortunately I don’t need to be outside today, and I’m not back on campus until tomorrow so hopefully it will be better by then.
I hope he makes it to you and gets you unstuck again - it’s good to hear that other motorists have stopped to check on you too.
Yesterday was an uneventful irkday and I logged off a little later than usual. I had planned to go to the gym but after my trip to the supermarket, I decided it was not a good idea so I didn’t go. I did collect up the recycling, shove it all in the bin and then haul the biiiiig bin to the kerb for today’s collection.
‘im indoors made mac and cheese for dinner, after consulting several recipes and asking me about various things. The kitchen looked like a tornado went through it, and I swear he’s used every pot and dish possible. I am loathe to look in the big cupboard, I am sure he’s put everything back in the wrong places. However, the end product was very good, and we have leftovers for lunch.
The binmen came round just after 7am so the biiiig bin can be hauled back to where it lives later. I have no plans to be outside the house today. We had more snow overnight and the road outside is looking quite nasty. Drivers are going slowly, which is a good thing because usually they fire up and down our street. There’s not much traffic, which leads me to suppose that most of the local schools are closed too.
I have to be on campus tomorrow so at some point today, I need to make campus food for three days, and I’ll be making chilli for dinner tonight too. Not looking forward to braving public transport in the morning either.
Well, some white stuff has arrived. It’s only a little, not really enough to form a plausible excuse to stay home, but the road outside hasn’t been gritted, I live on a hill, and there is heavy snow/sleet/rain forecast shortly. I’m tempted to stay in until I determine which of those it actually is, though I think it will just be sleet and so not an issue.
Good luck with that. My kids are 17 and 15 and don’t have that down. They do seem better away from home.
Happy Birthday Red ![]()
I think I have a faint memory of hearing of snow in part of Sacramento, somewhen during the time that we lived in the H Street apartment. I’m thinking it a bit odd that I wouldn’t have felt compelled to get in the car, and drive to where it was reported, to see for myself; but then that’s a mindset that seems to have come to me with owning a Jeep.
The way I recall that, the weather guessers claimed there was a chance, but it didn’t happen, and I’m pretty sure that either car we owned while we lived at that apartment wouldn’t have coped well with that kind of driving conditions.
Howdy. Happy Tuesday, all. And happy belated birthday, Red!
Nothing much going on here today except work and one IEP meeting. Maybe some house cleaning/organizing if I have the energy.
Good Mornin’ Y’all! Up and caffeinatin’. YAWN ‘Tis 45 Amurrkin out with a dense fog advisory until ten a.m. and then partly cloudy with a predicted high of 71. It might be sunny late afternoon, or not. Today is laundry day. I am antsy with anticipation. That is the big item on the agenda. OYKW has promised me that he will lean on/nag me today until I call and make an appointment with the gastroenterology folks. I am due for a colonoscopy. I have been bugged by them to make the pre-appointment for a month, but said I would make it after Christmas. Christmas ended yestiddy, officially, hence the lean on/nag me until I do so today. Sup will be BLTs and chips cause I am lazy today. Also because OYKW has expressed a gnawin’ and a cravin’ for a BLT.
Piper glad you got home safe and sound. I feel the same way about AAA that you do about CAA. I haven’t needed to use it much, but it’s worth the investment when needed.
While several of y’all deal with white stuff, there’s a warmin’ trend in these parts this week, with the high temp reachin’ upper 70s later in the week. Rain is also expected Sattidy and maybe Sunday.
I have been remiss ![]()

Now I need more caffeine and to feed rumbly tummy. Then, onward into the laundry! Rah.
Happy Tuesday Y’all!
I don’t know how many days of vacation I can take! After skiing all day we went to an onsen, hot springs spa sort of place. It has an outdoor bath as well. Really relaxing. Now I’m in the massage chair getting my back massaged. It’s not the same as a professional, but damn it feels good.
