I have taken to walking long distances every other day (the days I don’t walk I go to the Gym and do ‘normal’ walking - walking to and from work)
As I’ve only been doing it since about April 10th I’ve had certain problems come and go. Blister on left foot came and went. Blister on right foot came and went. Soreness on the back of the foot came and went.
But now I’ve got something that I’m not sure about. It feels like the cartilage underneath the ‘ball’ (the joint where my big toe connects to my foot) of my right foot is worn out so when I walk on it it feels…‘bony’. It’s not really painful, just slightly painful enough to be uncomfortable.
People who walk a lot. have you had this type of thing? Does it go away after a while like other problems associated with a lot of walking?
I’ve heard that the padding on the underside of the feet wears out along with everything else. No cite for that, though.
That joint can be sensitive to injury / irritation though; I had a case of sesamoiditis many years back that never really responded until I started wearing orthotic shoe inserts, which had an area for that joint to float a bit (built up around the joint, the joint itself had no such extra padding).
I’d suggest a visit to a podiatrist if this becomes more than an occasional annoyance.
Are you wearing good shoes? I would advise you to get really good proper walking shoes. They make a huge difference, and should cushion that area for you. But yeah, see a doc if it doesn’t go away; I’ve never had that particular problem.
I have Brasher* brand shoes, but they are shoes. I have considered buying a new pair of proper walking boots.
*Brasher are, at least as far as I am aware, known for their superiority in making walking boots. I love the shoes I have, they are comfortable to walk in without looking like boots (so I can wear them at work and when I am supposed to be smart)
I’ll see a doc if it persists (would do anyway
)
I have since come to the realization that the soles on the shoes I was wearing are far too thin.
I’ll wear my worn out brasher boots then buy some new ones.
