I was just watching the venerable MuchMusic’s “Too Hot Or Not” or whatever it’s being called these days, and they were discussing X-Tina’s infamous (and masterful … [droooool]) video for Dirrrty.
Clips of the video were interspersed with male celebs applauding and female celebs grimacing with disgust.
This video really gets me going, in that tingly, rush-of-blood-to-the-groin way. So listening to the usual yelps of “Degrading!” and “Exploitative!”, I began to wonder, am I a monster?
Let’s say IF this video is objectively degrading and morally reprehensible, what does that say about me?
That I am aroused by seeing women degraded? I don’t feel that way. I love women. I purposely avoid movies where there are things like rape scenes in them because I don’t want to be disturbed.
So the question becomes, are these images truly exploitative? Or are the viewers who object to them just opposed to all depictions of sexuality? Perhaps they see all overt sexual displays as degrading because they see anything other than softcore candlelight-and-roses scenarios as abhorrent.
One media literacy student was complaining that if you watch carefully, the words “Eat lick live pu**y” are flashed on the screen. This sounds like one of those “Hidden messages in Disney films” ULs to me. However, if it is true, what’s wrong with that? I can’t think of any women who’d complain if there was a little more cunnilingus in their lives. I know media literacy courses are supposed to be critical of the messages they see, but there is such a thing as being too critical.
I wish I’d caught this show the first time it was on (instead of in reruns) so I could have called in.
Any thoughts?
