My 13 year old cocker spaniel, Murfie is having surgery Monday to remove his eye. He was diagnosed with Glaucoma a few months ago, and the medication that has been keeping the swelling down, is no longer working, and the swelling is becoming painful. He lost his sight in that eye before he was diagnosed, so after he heals, there won’t be too much difference other than the way he looks, (and I won’t have to worry everytime he bonks it into the doorframe). But, his doctor is concerned about putting him under anesthesia at his advanced age.
Any warm wishes, thoughts and prayers are appreciated.
Beaming thoughts of healing and strength to Murhpie, Batsima. It sounds like the poor pooch has had a miserable time of it. He’ll probably feel a lot better once all the surgery is done.
If it’s any comfort, my 12.5 year old German Shepherd/Black Lab had to have ear surgery two weeks ago so I commiserate with your anxiety over the operation. She came through like a champ, though. She hated the protective “Queen Elizabeth” collar she had to wear for a few days while she healed but that was temporary.
I’ve always sworn that once her quality of life decreased too far I’d let her go gracefully, no matter how hard the loss is for me. Did your vet give you any advice that way? I was almost ready to let her go, rather than put her surgery at all at her age. My vet said as long as she eats well, her tail wags, she enjoys her walks and playing/snuggling with me, the quality of her life is still good. IOW, the risk was worth it because the beloved pup still has some good life left to her.
It sounds like Murphie is in the same boat perhaps? Murphie is a much smaller dog (with a longer life expectancy) and sounds like pretty spunky little guy. He’s already come through some tough times so don’t let the anxiety get to you too much.
::scritches Murphie’s ears:: Hang in there, boy. Best of all luck to both of you.
All the very best of doggy luck and spirit to you, Murfie. I’ll be looking out for an update on him when you can, Batsinma Belfry. Murfie’s got a grand and caring owner.
Mine thought it was a form of torture. She sat hunched and submissive while it was on, her eyes begging me to remove this bizarre form of “punishment.” She wouldn’t move. I finally took it off, unable to stand looking at my miserable dog. When she started sniffing at her wound, I put it back on her out of fear she’d tear at the stictches. Same thing: she hung her head and waited for the “punishment” to be over. I took it off, and after that, all I had to do was show her the collar to keep her from even looking at her wound.
Warm thoughts for both you and Murfie today. I’m sure he will pull through it just fine, but will milk it so he can get tons of cookies! I know cyber hugs are frowned on here so I shall refrain. Cyber-scritches for the Murf-ster though especially in that spot that always makes dog’s back legs kick
The vet just called and Murfie is doing great. PLUS, while Murfie was still under, the vet noticed the Murfie Breath of Doom, (there’s no way he could’ve missed it), so he looked around in there and extracted 2 absessed teeth, for FREE!
We may be able to bring him home tomorrow. Assuming we don’t get murdered in our sleep. The cat is not pleased. He’s looking at me like, “where’s my puppy, Bitch!”.
