Warren Jeffs lip wrestling with his 12 year old bride is kind of bizarre

Y’know, some of those photos of Jeffs standing there with the girls look for all the world like very heartwarming protraits of a man and his daughter. Which makes the others just that much ickier.

Out of curiosity why is it necessary for Jeffs & Co. to be marrying and impregnating 12 year olds? Why not wait until a (relatively) more reasonable 16 or so. What drives this need to acquire them so young?

Maybe I’m in the minority, but in the pictures the girl is dressed and hair styled so dowdily that she could be a thirty-year old midget. Maybe that’s the point.

Dunno, why do men like little girls? My theory is that little girls are less threatening than grown women.

When the Texas custody thing first broke, my husband had just finished spending a weekend, along with a posse of Moms, as Official Dad with our daughter’s junior high/high school choir trip (99% girls, six token boys). And he said, in honest puzzlement, and a trifle wearily, “Thirteen-year-old girls? I just spent the weekend with thirteen-year-old girls; frankly I don’t see the attraction…”

In patriarchies that practice polygamy the secular authority accrues as the number of descendants increases. Politics is a matter of exchanging brides, I let you have my daughter, you give me your daughter. Starting young is inevitable, for lots of practical reasons, less likelihood of rebellion, more children per wife, more daughters to trade, and, more successful transmission of acceptance to the next generation of little girls.

Gah- I’m so creeped out. And I’m sorry the state of Texas is leaning toward sending the kids back. Surely there has to be some way to break up that pedophile cult before they disappear into the mists like light-hating insects.

There was a lot of coverage of this a week or so ago in the Toronto Star. The articles also included mention of a Toronto-area imam who was ‘blessing’ multiple ‘marriages’ locally: the interview was with a woman whose legally-married husband did not tell her that he had ‘married’ another woman and had the relationship ‘blessed’.

I am just so sick of all these articles equating multiple marriage with marriage fraud, patriarchal control, and statutory rape. There seems to be no recognition that mutually-consenting adults should be allowed to have multiple relationships.

Multiple marriage is not against my religion, and I have know a few people who seem to have made it work. In the States (and Canada) they could only be married as couples, but they could still live together in one household.
