I thought that he looked kind of embarassed about the whole thing, before they even announced who won. The shot just after showing his clip he had this “yeah, whatever, I need to run to the bathroom” kind of look on his face.
You could tell he tried to be gracious. But you could also tell he was very, very disappointed. I personally think he should have gotten it, since IMO Penn chewed the scenery throughout Mystic River, but that’s just me.
Robin Williams actually said something funny on the CTV coverage after the show:
“Good luck with those business deals, Mr. Martin, and be sure to call Ken Lay.”
Fwaah.
Well,Merry sure looked like a Mary what with that pose onstage.
I am a very happy camper, am I!!! If onlu Viggo had been there, it would have been perfect.
Of course, Johnny Depp is always a pleasure to look at, and Will Smith is a fine looking man. Clint is aging well and I wouldn’t kick Tim Robbins out of bed for eating crackers. All in all, a very good night.
Perhaps he did clap…
Crystal’s comments made me think that I wasn’t the only person who thought he was visibly upset.
Well, it is a done deed, was a good show, if somewhat bland.
Best about the whole thing was the comments in this thread!
Thanks for the company, U just have time to jump in the shower and then straight off to work. I think I am going to feel this later! A good evening/morning to all!
I just watched the tape, and when the winner is announced, it’s a close up on Murray (can’t see his hands) and he nods slightly. After that, there were no shots of Murray until after Penn left the stage, and the applause has died down. That’s when Crystal made his comment about staying.
Before the announcement, Murray did look rather unhappy to be there at all.
As Murcielago says, the producers get the best picture Oscars. Which makes Wag the Dog that much more funny, when Hoffman’s character bitches about how there’s no Academy Award for best producer. Of course not–they already get recognized for best picture!
This was the first time I’ve ever seen Fran Walsh. She’s never shown on any of the LOTR Extended Edition featurettes (I’ve heard it’s because she and Peter decided he would be the public half of their partnership).
A few random thoughts: does anybody else think Peter Jackson is some kind of alternate universe Kevin Smith? There’s a resemblance or something there. Not that we’ll ever see Kevin Smith at the Oscars or wearing a tux. And they both remind me of the Comic Book Guy somehow. Anyway, congrats to Jackson, he had this coming.
I would’ve been happy to see Lost in Translation win any of the three categories it didn’t get, but I can’t complain about LOTR getting the major-award recognition it got this year after not really getting it in the years previous.
Why did they keep cutting to Crystal during Osborne’s speech? He did something sorta funny once, the other 3 times it was just distracting.
Kudos to Errol Morris for his comment about the “rabbit hole.”
Kudos to Sean Penn for getting in a shot about WMDs.
The only gig winner that I really disagreed with was Renee Zellweger who I thought played her role like Sandy the Squirrel from Spongbob Squarepants. The best description I can come up with for her performance is "rootin’ tootin’, rompin’ stompin.’ A totally hammy, cartoon character.
Theron is ok for Best Actress, I suppose but my sentimental favorite was Keira Castle-Hughes. She seemed more natural with none of the scenery chewing of the other nominees.
I liked Tim Robbins for Supporting Actor, thought he gave a classy speech even though I was hoping for some Bush bashing.
I’m glad Sean Penn finally got one even though Mystic River wasn’t necessarily the best performance og his career. It was a good performance, don’t get me wrong, but I think he’s given other performances that were phenomenal, not just good. No matter. Penn has long been my favorite actor and he was overdue for an Oscar.
Hooray for LOTR and Peter Jackson! It was cool to see all the hobbits on stage with him.
I’m glad Errol Morris finally got something. He’s long been one of the most fascinating documentary film makers around.
Over all, I wish the speeches had been more political. Anti-Bush rants are far more entertaining that listening to spoiled millionaires thank their agents.
Billy Crystal sucks. Billy Crystal is not funny. I hate Billy Crsystal. Please, God, no more Billy Crystal at the Oscars.
When I made my first post, I knew there was something more I wanted to say. I liked how Tim Robbins ended his speech–telling victims of childhood abuse that there was no shame in seeking therapy, and that it can help stop the cycle of abuse.
The closest things we had to political speeches were Penn’s and the speech for The Fog of War.
Brainfarts at 125am
I thought it was well done, over all.
I thought Crystal did a great job. It is extremely hard to appeal to all the people in the entire world with something so finicky as humor. He does it with taste, class and some great film clips. Stomping Michael Moore was hysterical.
The opening song was sixty percent good. It fizzled out with the bit about Seabiscuit/Pete Rose gag and whatever the last movie he summed up just fell flat . must have put every effort into the lyrics for the Sound of Music/LOTR bit. Some great gags overall.
Who MC’d last year or the past few? How quick the memory fails.
Most uncomfortable moment was the Pre-show coverage on ABC ( or whomever) when one of the correspondences, Bill Bush (?), just made a complete ASS out of himself. When he put Keisha Knight-hughes and Johnny Depp on the spot, Depp handled himself brilliantly and oh-so-suavely. It was embarrassing. Made me a fangirl of his even more…rwarrrrr.
Is there some kind of rule that Sting must make an appearance at every awards show and global non-war/important event even if he is not specifically involved? Gah. Make him go away.
The dresses were underwhelming this year. Uma looked like she macheted some curtains for a dress.
-
Who was the girl in red that presented the Science and Technology awards?
-
What’s the name of the instrument played by Sting and the one played by the singer of “A kiss at the end of the rainbow”?
Thanks in advance.
- Jennifer Garner, she stars in a TV show called Alias and was in the movie Daredevil.
- Last I heard a hurdy-gurdy, but it is being discussed in Cafe Society and in GQ with its own threads.
The scientific and technical awards were given out at a separate ceremony on Feb. 14. Categories like editing, special visual effects, sound mixing, and sound editing (i.e., creation of sound effects) are artistic awards, not techincal awards.
Oprah was nominated for Best Supporting Actress, but did not won. Anjelica Huston took the Oscar for Prizzi’s Honor, and The Color Purple was completely shut out of the awards.

Catherine O’Hara wasn’t in any of the Back to the Future movies. Are you thinking of the Home Alone movies?
Best Picture has always been the last award.
Hooray for everything I saw (I kept switching over to Toy Story, so I missed a good bit). I agree with every award except for best actor, which should’ve gone to Bill Murray.
Best bits: Alison Krauss (with two songs!), Mitch and Mickey (and Annette O’Toole’s reaction), Charlize Theron’s acceptance speech, Fran Walsh interrupting the orchestra to thank the people who inspired the song, and the LOTR group having the whole cast come up to accept the award.
The show itself was pretty boring, and it’s just obnoxious to make people rush through their speeches if you’re still going to treat the rest of the show like it’s a big deal. But all of the awards themselves, except for best actor, I agree with, and this is the first year that’s ever happened.
