Watcha Drinkin' This Weekend?

It’s been a very busy week for me albeit an exceptionally good one. A very good one indeed. SO good that as a reward to myself, instead of hitting the live lesbian sex shows as is my usual wont, I have finally cracked open that liter bottle of Tanqueray No 10 gin I picked up at the duty-free shop in Ho Chi Minh City Airport 2-1/2 months ago and am sitting here sipping a nice gin and tonic. It really is good stuff, and the bottle is pretty neat too; that’s it in the photo in the link.

So what are you drinking this weekend?

Right now? Coffee.

Later? I’ve been drinking herbal tea at night, because I’m trying to lose some weight.

If I wasn’t abstaining at the moment? There was a reference to a Papa Doble (Hemingway’s favorite cocktail) in Newsweek this week and it sounded good - two and a half jiggers of Bacardi White Label Rum, the juice of two limes and half a grapefruit and six drops of maraschino, mixed vigorously with shaved ice. Sounds like it would be very cooling in the hundred degree temps we’ve been having.

I like the linked booze review describing how the Nazis back in WWII almost scuppered production of No 10 today.

Beer. VB to be precise (Victoria Bitter).

I am very basic.

I don’t think I’ve tried VB, although I’m sure I’ve seen it here. But there’s a local micro-brewery called The Londoner that brews its own bitter, and the stuff is not bad.

Until the heat wave broke this morning, my weekend beverage would have been the same as I’ve had every day it’s been over 90 degrees - ice water, and plenty of it. (Iced coffee in the morning.) I simply cannot drink alcohol and function in the heat. But tonight! A Blue Moon ale with the pizza sounds just right.

It’s been 32C here for the last few days so last night started with Strawberry Daiquiris by the pool then I lit a fire and switched to beer, Bud Light. No idea what tonight will bring, but I am pretty sure I am playing a private party so probably just beer.

Tea, milk, and water.

Working on a pot of coffee right now. Later I’ll have water. I may or may not have some beer later or tomorrow. I have a Henry Weinhard or two that my friend left, a few bottles of Longboard Lager (which is better), a couple dozen bottles of Guinness, a bottle of Samuel Smith’s oatmeal stout, a bottle of Samuel Smith’s nut brown ale, a bottle of Newcastle brown ale, and a large bottle of Three Philosophers. There’s an open bottle of Black & White, and I might have some of that.

But I’m really lazy about drinking alcohol. I’ll probably forget and just drink water.

Cheap Chinese beer. Hard to believe it’s my last weekend in China. Maybe tomorrow, for my last last farewell to this fair city, I’ll drink some baijiu- China’s favorite liquor, my hometown’s pride, and the worst liquid ever created by mankind.

I’m giving a party tomorrow and our national football team will be playing in the final. And it’s 30+ c outside. So lots of beer and sangria will be ready.

ETA: I’m Dutch. The sangria is just there because straight wine will knock you over at these temperatures.

I have the liquor but I don’t have the juices for a mixed drink I invented (I think) called “Lez out.”

It’s Vodka, Peach Schnapps, Triple Sec, with equal parts cranberry juice and orange juice. Sometimes I add a splash of pineapple juice.

Even before you put the juices in it’s mostly full of alcohol, but when everything’s said and done all you can really taste is the juice. So, it’ll get your girlfriend so drunk she’ll lez out.

Yes, I was 21 when I made it up, why do you ask?

Flor de Cana rum. Cheap and good.

Patron Silver! The little club I go to keeps it on a sign that lights up so the tequila is nice and warm. Yum! Is that normal, to serve tequila warm?

Diet Cola.

Hmm. Last night was flavored vodka with club soda (yes, fey, but hey, it’s hot and muggy these days and that is one refrescante combination). Tonight I may go see Latin jazz, so I dunno, rum and soda, maybe.

Yes.

No.

Right now, a vanilla root beer from Sonic.

Just got back from the store with a liter of my favorite Irish, Bushmill’s.

Had to rub my eyes a bit, though, looking at the prices on the shelf. The 750ml bottle was $22.99, the liter was $18.99. Turned out the liter was on sale.

What kind of place puts the larger bottle on sale for a lower price than the smaller?

No matter, I’m happy for it…

Henry Weinhard’s regular. Got a case at CostCo a week ago. I haven’t had it for decades. What can I say, it’s better than Bud but not as good as what I would put in the microbrew category. We drank it back in the early 80’s before the microbrewery explosion. I think it tasted better 30 years ago but that may be just smack talk.
