Alas, I’ve never cared for the taste of watermelon, nor any other melon I’ve tried.
I used to feel deprived as a kid when we were at the beach and the adults brought out the watermelon and I watched everyone else eating big mouthfuls of that red, juicy flesh and then spitting out those big black seeds. Sometimes I would take a bite of melon, hoping I would like it this time, and every time I spit it out on the ground. I do enjoy seeing them at the grocery store and at roadside stands, though.

Just a plain old slice freshly cut. Has anyone noticed the supposed viagra like effects?

Depends on what you’re doing to the watermrlon.
I guess.

The best watermelon I ever, ever had was plain—just picked out of a Biloxi, MS garden and was ever so slightly warmed from the morning sun. We had it with a good old-fashioned Biloxi breakfast. I’ll never forget it and have never had better watermelon since.

It’s just as good in Bakersfield. Believe me.
Or in a field near Redondo beach.
Hope I spelled that right.
I just got in from having a chilled piece as large as my head. Then I remembered this thread, so I had another one, lightly salted. Gotta cover all your bases.

Wow, that was a big piece then. ![]()
I just realized that we’re actually participating in a watermelon poll.

Cold and plain . . . or with a little champagne poured over it.

Brain-freeze cold and unadorned, if you please.
Just came home from the gym, desperately in need of a “brain-freeze cold” melon and was disappointed to find that the one my wife bought yesterday was not in the fridge.
It was very sweet and tasty, but it was … warm.
Of course, now that it’s in quarters, tomorrow night’s serving will be icy cold :).
I had about 1/3 of a hefty refrigerator size melon (round seedless) tonight. I stopped by the store just for that. I cut it up in a civilized manner, but devoured it like a caveman. I felt so primal just digging in with so much gusto, with juice running down my chin. I want more, but then I’ll be up all night going potty.

Plain and (if possible) cold. And I eat the seeds.

I think I love you. Seriously, even the slightest scent of any of these destroys my appetite. And every single girlfriend or wife I’ve ever had loved these. It created lots of arguments because they wouldn’t believe that I hated all melons, and didn’t want to be in the presence of nature’s armpits. If you feel the same way about cucumbers (pickles are ok), I’d marry you. ![]()
Sorry, but I’m already married. I despise the smell of watermelon or cucumber, much less the taste. As someone further upthread said, it’s kind of weird to have everyone else all excited when they bring out a watermelon and you’re standing there going “Ewwwwww!”

Eh, I can’t win.
It’s a 50/50 shot at getting it right when you have a poll about food.
Fresh, cold, with nothing added. It’s a treat when the weather’s hot, so I want it cold. And I swallow the seeds; no biggie.
A sidenote: My wife used to be an editor for a major educational publisher. The company was so politically correct that not only could no black children be shown in any book eating watermelon, due to the stereotype; no one could be shown eating watermelon, regardless of race or ethnicity. It was the forbidden fruit.
Cold and plain. I just finished eating a few chunks of watermelon before I opened this thread, and the box of sea salt is sitting right here…I may need to go downstairs for more, you know, just for scientific purposes.
I also like watermelon with feta cheese and black pepper. I think it’s supposed to have a tiny bit of basil, too, but I usually don’t have that on hand.
Plain and as cold as possible, although I’ll eat it room temp.
I’ve tried it salted (at someone else’s insistence), it was ok but I like it better natural. Never thought about using anything spicy on it. Hmmm, might be interesting. Sugar is just wrong, watermelon is naturally sweet enough.
I like my watermelon with vodka.
Cut a hole. Pour in a pint of vodka, or as much vodka as it will absorb. Keep it in a freezer for the night and enjoy the watermelon in the morning.
Plain and cold. Not ice-cold, but cold.

I was wonderin’ if I would have to be the one to mention this.
I haven’t had a spiked watermelon in years. It just might have to happen soon.
I like it ice cold with a little salt. I live in an area where some of the best watermelons are grown, so during summer we eat an average of three to four watermelons a week. I just put two medium sized ones in the fridge to chill.
I always keep mine in the fridge, then slice a wedge and eat it plain, usually with a fork, but if it’s a thin wedge, I will pick it up.
